2. Perhaps those who disbelieve will wish669 that they had been Muslims.

Notes

[669] On the Day of Judgement or at the time of death.

dharhum yakulū wayatamattaʿū wayul'hihimu l-amalu fasawfa yaʿlamūna

3. Let them eat and enjoy themselves and be diverted by [false] hope, for they are going to know.

wamā ahlaknā min qaryatin illā walahā kitābun maʿlūmun

4. And We did not destroy any city but that for it was a known decree.

waqālū yāayyuhā alladhī nuzzila ʿalayhi l-dhik'ru innaka lamajnūnun

6. And they say, "O you upon whom the message has been sent down, indeed you are mad.670

Notes

[670] Literally, "possessed by jinn."

law mā tatīnā bil-malāikati in kunta mina l-ṣādiqīna

7. Why do you not bring us the angels, if you should be among the truthful?"

mā nunazzilu l-malāikata illā bil-ḥaqi wamā kānū idhan munẓarīna

8. We do not send down the angels except with truth;671 and they [i.e., the disbelievers] would not then be reprieved.

Notes

[671] i.e., with a message or, as the conclusion of the verse suggests, to carry out a promised punishment.

innā naḥnu nazzalnā l-dhik'ra wa-innā lahu laḥāfiẓūna

9. Indeed, it is We who sent down the message [i.e., the Qur’ān], and indeed, We will be its guardian.

walaqad arsalnā min qablika fī shiyaʿi l-awalīna

10. And We had certainly sent [messengers] before you, [O Muḥammad], among the sects of the former peoples.

wamā yatīhim min rasūlin illā kānū bihi yastahziūna

11. And no messenger would come to them except that they ridiculed him.

kadhālika naslukuhu fī qulūbi l-muj'rimīna

12. Thus do We insert it [i.e., denial] into the hearts of the criminals.

lā yu'minūna bihi waqad khalat sunnatu l-awalīna

13. They will not believe in it, while there has already occurred the precedent of the former peoples.

walaw fataḥnā ʿalayhim bāban mina l-samāi faẓallū fīhi yaʿrujūna

14. And [even] if We opened to them a gate from the heaven and they continued therein to ascend,

laqālū innamā sukkirat abṣārunā bal naḥnu qawmun masḥūrūna

15. They would say, "Our eyes have only been dazzled. Rather, we are a people affected by magic."

walaqad jaʿalnā fī l-samāi burūjan wazayyannāhā lilnnāẓirīna

16. And We have placed within the heaven great stars and have beautified it for the observers.

waḥafiẓ'nāhā min kulli shayṭānin rajīmin

17. And We have protected it from every devil expelled [from the mercy of Allāh]

illā mani is'taraqa l-samʿa fa-atbaʿahu shihābun mubīnun

18. Except one who steals a hearing and is pursued by a clear burning flame.

wal-arḍa madadnāhā wa-alqaynā fīhā rawāsiya wa-anbatnā fīhā min kulli shayin mawzūnin

19. And the earth - We have spread it and cast therein firmly set mountains and caused to grow therein [something] of every well-balanced thing.

wajaʿalnā lakum fīhā maʿāyisha waman lastum lahu birāziqīna

20. And We have made for you therein means of living and [for] those for whom you are not providers.672

Notes

[672] Allāh has put at your service other men and animals for which He provides. An additional meaning is that Allāh provides means for your living and for all other creatures as well.

wa-in min shayin illā ʿindanā khazāinuhu wamā nunazziluhu illā biqadarin maʿlūmin

21. And there is not a thing but that with Us are its depositories, and We do not send it down except according to a known [i.e., specified] measure.

wa-arsalnā l-riyāḥa lawāqiḥa fa-anzalnā mina l-samāi māan fa-asqaynākumūhu wamā antum lahu bikhāzinīna

22. And We have sent the fertilizing winds673 and sent down water from the sky and given you drink from it. And you are not its retainers.

Notes

[673] Causing precipitation in rainclouds or carrying pollen. Another meaning is "pregnant winds," i.e., those carrying rainclouds.

wa-innā lanaḥnu nuḥ'yī wanumītu wanaḥnu l-wārithūna

23. And indeed, it is We who give life and cause death, and We are the Inheritor.674

Notes

[674] Allāh (subḥānahu wa taʿālā) remains after all creation has passed away.

walaqad ʿalim'nā l-mus'taqdimīna minkum walaqad ʿalim'nā l-mus'takhirīna

24. And We have already known the preceding [generations] among you, and We have already known the later [ones to come].

wa-inna rabbaka huwa yaḥshuruhum innahu ḥakīmun ʿalīmun

25. And indeed, your Lord will gather them; indeed, He is Wise and Knowing.

walaqad khalaqnā l-insāna min ṣalṣālin min ḥama-in masnūnin

26. And We did certainly create man out of clay from an altered black mud.

wal-jāna khalaqnāhu min qablu min nāri l-samūmi

27. And the jinn We created before from scorching fire.

wa-idh qāla rabbuka lil'malāikati innī khāliqun basharan min ṣalṣālin min ḥama-in masnūnin

28. And [mention, O Muḥammad], when your Lord said to the angels, "I will create a human being out of clay from an altered black mud.

fa-idhā sawwaytuhu wanafakhtu fīhi min rūḥī faqaʿū lahu sājidīna

29. And when I have proportioned him and breathed into him of My [created] soul,675 then fall down to him in prostration."

Notes

[675] The element of life and soul which Allāh created for that body, not His own spirit or part of Himself (as some mistakenly believe).

fasajada l-malāikatu kulluhum ajmaʿūna

30. So the angels prostrated - all of them entirely,

illā ib'līsa abā an yakūna maʿa l-sājidīna

31. Except Iblees;676 he refused to be with those who prostrated.

Notes

[676] Who was of the jinn. See 18:50.

32. [Allāh] said, "O Iblees, what is [the matter] with you that you are not with those who prostrate?"

qāla fa-ukh'ruj min'hā fa-innaka rajīmun

34. [Allāh] said, "Then depart from it,677 for indeed, you are expelled.

Notes

wa-inna ʿalayka l-laʿnata ilā yawmi l-dīni

35. And indeed, upon you is the curse until the Day of Recompense."

qāla rabbi fa-anẓir'nī ilā yawmi yub'ʿathūna

36. He said, "My Lord, then reprieve me until the Day they are resurrected."

qāla fa-innaka mina l-munẓarīna

37. [Allāh] said, "So indeed, you are of those reprieved

ilā yawmi l-waqti l-maʿlūmi

38. Until the Day of the time well-known."

qāla rabbi bimā aghwaytanī la-uzayyinanna lahum fī l-arḍi wala-ugh'wiyannahum ajmaʿīna

39. [Iblees] said, "My Lord, because You have put me in error, I will surely make [disobedience] attractive to them [i.e., mankind] on earth, and I will mislead them all

illā ʿibādaka min'humu l-mukh'laṣīna

40. Except, among them, Your chosen servants."

qāla hādhā ṣirāṭun ʿalayya mus'taqīmun

41. [Allāh] said, "This is a path [of return] to Me [that is] straight.

inna ʿibādī laysa laka ʿalayhim sul'ṭānun illā mani ittabaʿaka mina l-ghāwīna

42. Indeed, My servants - no authority will you have over them, except those who follow you of the deviators.

wa-inna jahannama lamawʿiduhum ajmaʿīna

43. And indeed, Hell is the promised place for them all.

lahā sabʿatu abwābin likulli bābin min'hum juz'on maqsūmun

44. It has seven gates; for every gate is of them [i.e., Satan's followers] a portion designated."

inna l-mutaqīna fī jannātin waʿuyūnin

ud'khulūhā bisalāmin āminīna

46. [Having been told], "Enter it in peace, safe [and secure]."

64. And we have come to you with truth, and indeed, we are truthful.

fa-akhadhathumu l-ṣayḥatu mush'riqīna

73. So the shriek682 seized them at sunrise.

Notes

[682] See footnote to 11:67.

fajaʿalnā ʿāliyahā sāfilahā wa-amṭarnā ʿalayhim ḥijāratan min sijjīlin

74. And We made the highest part [of the city] its lowest and rained upon them stones of hard clay.

inna fī dhālika laāyātin lil'mutawassimīna

75. Indeed in that are signs for those who discern.

wa-innahā labisabīlin muqīmin

76. And indeed, they [i.e., those cities] are [situated] on an established road.

inna fī dhālika laāyatan lil'mu'minīna

77. Indeed in that is a sign for the believers.

wa-in kāna aṣḥābu l-aykati laẓālimīna

78. And the companions of the thicket [i.e., the people of Madyan] were [also] wrongdoers,

fa-intaqamnā min'hum wa-innahumā labi-imāmin mubīnin

79. So We took retribution from them, and indeed, both [cities] are on a clear highway.

walaqad kadhaba aṣḥābu l-ḥij'ri l-mur'salīna

80. And certainly did the companions of al-Ḥijr683 [i.e., the Thamūd] deny the messengers.

waātaynāhum āyātinā fakānū ʿanhā muʿ'riḍīna

81. And We gave them Our signs, but from them they were turning away.

wakānū yanḥitūna mina l-jibāli buyūtan āminīna

82. And they used to carve from the mountains, houses, feeling secure.

fa-akhadhathumu l-ṣayḥatu muṣ'biḥīna

83. But the shriek seized them at early morning,

famā aghnā ʿanhum mā kānū yaksibūna

84. So nothing availed them [from] what they used to earn.

wamā khalaqnā l-samāwāti wal-arḍa wamā baynahumā illā bil-ḥaqi wa-inna l-sāʿata laātiyatun fa-iṣ'faḥi l-ṣafḥa l-jamīla

85. And We have not created the heavens and earth and that between them except in truth. And indeed, the Hour is coming; so forgive with gracious forgiveness.

inna rabbaka huwa l-khalāqu l-ʿalīmu

86. Indeed, your Lord - He is the Knowing Creator.

walaqad ātaynāka sabʿan mina l-mathānī wal-qur'āna l-ʿaẓīma

87. And We have certainly given you, [O Muḥammad], seven of the often repeated [verses]684 and the great Qur’ān.

Notes

[684] Referring to Sūrah al-Fātiḥah.

waqul innī anā l-nadhīru l-mubīnu

alladhīna jaʿalū l-qur'āna ʿiḍīna

91. Who have made the Qur’ān into portions.686
