إِذَا وَقَعَتِ ٱلْوَاقِعَةُ ١

1. When the Occurrence occurs,

سورة الواقعة

بِسْمِ ٱللَّهِ ٱلرَّحْمَٰنِ ٱلرَّحِيمِ
bis'mi l-lahi l-raḥmāni l-raḥīmi
لَيْسَ لِوَقْعَتِهَا كَاذِبَةٌ ٢
laysa liwaqʿatihā kādhibatun
2. There is, at its occurrence, no denial.
خَافِضَةٌ رَّافِعَةٌ ٣
khāfiḍatun rāfiʿatun
3. It will bring down [some] and raise up [others].1608
Notes
[1608] According to their deeds rather than wealth and social position, as is the case in this world.
إِذَا رُجَّتِ ٱلْأَرْضُ رَجًّا ٤
idhā rujjati l-arḍu rajjan
4. When the earth is shaken with convulsion
وَبُسَّتِ ٱلْجِبَالُ بَسًّا ٥
wabussati l-jibālu bassan
5. And the mountains are broken down, crumbling
فَكَانَتْ هَبَآءً مُّنۢبَثًّا ٦
fakānat habāan munbathan
6. And become dust dispersing,
وَكُنتُمْ أَزْوَٰجًا ثَلَٰثَةً ٧
wakuntum azwājan thalāthatan
7. And you become [of] three kinds:
فَأَصْحَٰبُ ٱلْمَيْمَنَةِ مَآ أَصْحَٰبُ ٱلْمَيْمَنَةِ ٨
fa-aṣḥābu l-maymanati mā aṣḥābu l-maymanati
8. Then the companions of the right - what are the companions of the right?1609

[1609] i.e., those given their records in their right hand and who are destined for Paradise.
وَأَصْحَٰبُ ٱلْمَشْـَٔمَةِ مَآ أَصْحَٰبُ ٱلْمَشْـَٔمَةِ ٩
wa-aṣḥābu l-mashamati mā aṣḥābu l-mashamati
9. And the companions of the left - what are companions of the left?1610
Notes
[1610] i.e., those given their records in their left hand and who are destined for Hell.
وَٱلسَّٰبِقُونَ ٱلسَّٰبِقُونَ ١٠
wal-sābiqūna l-sābiqūna
10. And the forerunners, the forerunners1611 -
Notes
[1611] The words can also be understood as a complete sentence, i.e., "The forerunners [in good deeds] are the forerunners [in entering Paradise]."
أُو۟لَٰٓئِكَ ٱلْمُقَرَّبُونَ ١١
ulāika l-muqarabūna
11. Those are the ones brought near [to Allāh]
فِى جَنَّٰتِ ٱلنَّعِيمِ ١٢
fī jannāti l-naʿīmi
12. In the Gardens of Pleasure,
ثُلَّةٌ مِّنَ ٱلْأَوَّلِينَ ١٣
thullatun mina l-awalīna
13. A [large] company of the former peoples
وَقَلِيلٌ مِّنَ ٱلْـَٔاخِرِينَ ١٤
waqalīlun mina l-ākhirīna
14. And a few of the later peoples,
عَلَىٰ سُرُرٍ مَّوْضُونَةٍ ١٥
ʿalā sururin mawḍūnatin
15. On thrones woven [with ornament],
مُّتَّكِـِٔينَ عَلَيْهَا مُتَقَٰبِلِينَ ١٦
muttakiīna ʿalayhā mutaqābilīna
16. Reclining on them, facing each other.
يَطُوفُ عَلَيْهِمْ وِلْدَٰنٌ مُّخَلَّدُونَ ١٧
yaṭūfu ʿalayhim wil'dānun mukhalladūna
17. There will circulate among them young boys made eternal
بِأَكْوَابٍ وَأَبَارِيقَ وَكَأْسٍ مِّن مَّعِينٍ ١٨
bi-akwābin wa-abārīqa wakasin min maʿīnin
18. With vessels, pitchers and a cup [of wine] from a flowing spring -
لَّا يُصَدَّعُونَ عَنْهَا وَلَا يُنزِفُونَ ١٩
lā yuṣaddaʿūna ʿanhā walā yunzifūna
19. No headache will they have therefrom, nor will they be intoxicated -
وَفَٰكِهَةٍ مِّمَّا يَتَخَيَّرُونَ ٢٠
wafākihatin mimmā yatakhayyarūna
20. And fruit of what they select
وَلَحْمِ طَيْرٍ مِّمَّا يَشْتَهُونَ ٢١
walaḥmi ṭayrin mimmā yashtahūna
21. And the meat of fowl, from whatever they desire.
وَحُورٌ عِينٌ ٢٢
waḥūrun ʿīnun
22. And [for them are] fair women with large, [beautiful] eyes,
كَأَمْثَٰلِ ٱللُّؤْلُؤِ ٱلْمَكْنُونِ ٢٣
ka-amthāli l-lu'lu-i l-maknūni
23. The likenesses of pearls well-protected,
جَزَآءًۢ بِمَا كَانُوا۟ يَعْمَلُونَ ٢٤
jazāan bimā kānū yaʿmalūna
24. As reward for what they used to do.
لَا يَسْمَعُونَ فِيهَا لَغْوًا وَلَا تَأْثِيمًا ٢٥
lā yasmaʿūna fīhā laghwan walā tathīman
25. They will not hear therein ill speech or commission of sin -
إِلَّا قِيلًا سَلَٰمًا سَلَٰمًا ٢٦
illā qīlan salāman salāman
26. Only a saying [of] peace, peace.
وَأَصْحَٰبُ ٱلْيَمِينِ مَآ أَصْحَٰبُ ٱلْيَمِينِ ٢٧
wa-aṣḥābu l-yamīni mā aṣḥābu l-yamīni
27. The companions of the right - what are the companions of the right?
فِى سِدْرٍ مَّخْضُودٍ ٢٨
fī sid'rin makhḍūdin
28. [They will be] among lote trees with thorns removed
وَطَلْحٍ مَّنضُودٍ ٢٩
waṭalḥin manḍūdin
29. And [banana] trees layered [with fruit]
وَظِلٍّ مَّمْدُودٍ ٣٠
waẓillin mamdūdin
30. And shade extended
وَمَآءٍ مَّسْكُوبٍ ٣١
wamāin maskūbin
31. And water poured out
وَفَٰكِهَةٍ كَثِيرَةٍ ٣٢
wafākihatin kathīratin
32. And fruit, abundant [and varied],
لَّا مَقْطُوعَةٍ وَلَا مَمْنُوعَةٍ ٣٣
lā maqṭūʿatin walā mamnūʿatin
33. Neither limited [to season] nor forbidden,
وَفُرُشٍ مَّرْفُوعَةٍ ٣٤
wafurushin marfūʿatin
34. And [upon] beds raised high.
إِنَّآ أَنشَأْنَٰهُنَّ إِنشَآءً ٣٥
innā anshanāhunna inshāan
35. Indeed, We have produced them [i.e., the women of Paradise] in a [new] creation
فَجَعَلْنَٰهُنَّ أَبْكَارًا ٣٦
fajaʿalnāhunna abkāran
36. And made them virgins,
عُرُبًا أَتْرَابًا ٣٧
ʿuruban atrāban
37. Devoted [to their husbands] and of equal age,
لِّأَصْحَٰبِ ٱلْيَمِينِ ٣٨
li-aṣḥābi l-yamīni
38. For the companions of the right [who are]
ثُلَّةٌ مِّنَ ٱلْأَوَّلِينَ ٣٩
thullatun mina l-awalīna
39. A company of the former peoples
وَثُلَّةٌ مِّنَ ٱلْـَٔاخِرِينَ ٤٠
wathullatun mina l-ākhirīna
40. And a company of the later peoples.
وَأَصْحَٰبُ ٱلشِّمَالِ مَآ أَصْحَٰبُ ٱلشِّمَالِ ٤١
wa-aṣḥābu l-shimāli mā aṣḥābu l-shimāli
41. And the companions of the left - what are the companions of the left?
فِى سَمُومٍ وَحَمِيمٍ ٤٢
fī samūmin waḥamīmin
42. [They will be] in scorching fire and scalding water
وَظِلٍّ مِّن يَحْمُومٍ ٤٣
waẓillin min yaḥmūmin
43. And a shade of black smoke,
لَّا بَارِدٍ وَلَا كَرِيمٍ ٤٤
lā bāridin walā karīmin
44. Neither cool nor beneficial.
إِنَّهُمْ كَانُوا۟ قَبْلَ ذَٰلِكَ مُتْرَفِينَ ٤٥
innahum kānū qabla dhālika mut'rafīna
45. Indeed they were, before that, indulging in affluence,
وَكَانُوا۟ يُصِرُّونَ عَلَى ٱلْحِنثِ ٱلْعَظِيمِ ٤٦
wakānū yuṣirrūna ʿalā l-ḥinthi l-ʿaẓīmi
46. And they used to persist in the great violation,1612
Notes
[1612] i.e., shirk (association with Allāh) or disbelief.
وَكَانُوا۟ يَقُولُونَ أَئِذَا مِتْنَا وَكُنَّا تُرَابًا وَعِظَٰمًا أَءِنَّا لَمَبْعُوثُونَ ٤٧
wakānū yaqūlūna a-idhā mit'nā wakunnā turāban waʿiẓāman a-innā lamabʿūthūna
47. And they used to say, "When we die and become dust and bones, are we indeed to be resurrected?
أَوَءَابَآؤُنَا ٱلْأَوَّلُونَ ٤٨
awaābāunā l-awalūna
48. And our forefathers [as well]?"
قُلْ إِنَّ ٱلْأَوَّلِينَ وَٱلْـَٔاخِرِينَ ٤٩
qul inna l-awalīna wal-ākhirīna
49. Say, [O Muḥammad], "Indeed, the former and later peoples
لَمَجْمُوعُونَ إِلَىٰ مِيقَٰتِ يَوْمٍ مَّعْلُومٍ ٥٠
lamajmūʿūna ilā mīqāti yawmin maʿlūmin
50. Are to be gathered together for the appointment of a known Day."
ثُمَّ إِنَّكُمْ أَيُّهَا ٱلضَّآلُّونَ ٱلْمُكَذِّبُونَ ٥١
thumma innakum ayyuhā l-ḍālūna l-mukadhibūna
51. Then indeed you, O those astray [who are] deniers,
لَـَٔاكِلُونَ مِن شَجَرٍ مِّن زَقُّومٍ ٥٢
laākilūna min shajarin min zaqqūmin
52. Will be eating from trees of zaqqūm
فَمَالِـُٔونَ مِنْهَا ٱلْبُطُونَ ٥٣
famāliūna min'hā l-buṭūna
53. And filling with it your bellies
فَشَٰرِبُونَ عَلَيْهِ مِنَ ٱلْحَمِيمِ ٥٤
fashāribūna ʿalayhi mina l-ḥamīmi
54. And drinking on top of it from scalding water
فَشَٰرِبُونَ شُرْبَ ٱلْهِيمِ ٥٥
fashāribūna shur'ba l-hīmi
55. And will drink as the drinking of thirsty camels.
هَٰذَا نُزُلُهُمْ يَوْمَ ٱلدِّينِ ٥٦
hādhā nuzuluhum yawma l-dīni
56. That is their accommodation on the Day of Recompense.
نَحْنُ خَلَقْنَٰكُمْ فَلَوْلَا تُصَدِّقُونَ ٥٧
naḥnu khalaqnākum falawlā tuṣaddiqūna
57. We have created you, so why do you not believe?
أَفَرَءَيْتُم مَّا تُمْنُونَ ٥٨
afara-aytum mā tum'nūna
58. Have you seen that which you emit?1613
Notes
[1613] i.e., semen, which contains the potential for human life.
ءَأَنتُمْ تَخْلُقُونَهُۥٓ أَمْ نَحْنُ ٱلْخَٰلِقُونَ ٥٩
a-antum takhluqūnahu am naḥnu l-khāliqūna
59. Is it you who creates it, or are We the Creator?
نَحْنُ قَدَّرْنَا بَيْنَكُمُ ٱلْمَوْتَ وَمَا نَحْنُ بِمَسْبُوقِينَ ٦٠
naḥnu qaddarnā baynakumu l-mawta wamā naḥnu bimasbūqīna
60. We have decreed death among you, and We are not to be outdone
عَلَىٰٓ أَن نُّبَدِّلَ أَمْثَٰلَكُمْ وَنُنشِئَكُمْ فِى مَا لَا تَعْلَمُونَ ٦١
ʿalā an nubaddila amthālakum wanunshi-akum fī mā lā taʿlamūna
61. In that We will change your likenesses and produce you in that [form] which you do not know.1614
Notes
[1614] An alternative meaning has also been given: "...in that We will replace the likes of you [with others upon the earth] and create you [in the Hereafter] in that which you do not know."
وَلَقَدْ عَلِمْتُمُ ٱلنَّشْأَةَ ٱلْأُولَىٰ فَلَوْلَا تَذَكَّرُونَ ٦٢
walaqad ʿalim'tumu l-nashata l-ūlā falawlā tadhakkarūna
62. And you have already known the first creation, so will you not remember?
أَفَرَءَيْتُم مَّا تَحْرُثُونَ ٦٣
afara-aytum mā taḥruthūna
63. And have you seen that [seed] which you sow?
ءَأَنتُمْ تَزْرَعُونَهُۥٓ أَمْ نَحْنُ ٱلزَّٰرِعُونَ ٦٤
a-antum tazraʿūnahu am naḥnu l-zāriʿūna
64. Is it you who makes it grow, or are We the grower?
لَوْ نَشَآءُ لَجَعَلْنَٰهُ حُطَٰمًا فَظَلْتُمْ تَفَكَّهُونَ ٦٥
law nashāu lajaʿalnāhu ḥuṭāman faẓaltum tafakkahūna
65. If We willed, We could make it [dry] debris, and you would remain in wonder,1615
Notes
[1615] At what had happened or remain in a state of shock. Another meaning is "in regret."
إِنَّا لَمُغْرَمُونَ ٦٦
innā lamugh'ramūna
66. [Saying], "Indeed, we are [now] in debt;
بَلْ نَحْنُ مَحْرُومُونَ ٦٧
bal naḥnu maḥrūmūna
67. Rather, we have been deprived."
أَفَرَءَيْتُمُ ٱلْمَآءَ ٱلَّذِى تَشْرَبُونَ ٦٨
afara-aytumu l-māa alladhī tashrabūna
68. And have you seen the water that you drink?
ءَأَنتُمْ أَنزَلْتُمُوهُ مِنَ ٱلْمُزْنِ أَمْ نَحْنُ ٱلْمُنزِلُونَ ٦٩
a-antum anzaltumūhu mina l-muz'ni am naḥnu l-munzilūna
69. Is it you who brought it down from the clouds, or is it We who bring it down?
لَوْ نَشَآءُ جَعَلْنَٰهُ أُجَاجًا فَلَوْلَا تَشْكُرُونَ ٧٠
law nashāu jaʿalnāhu ujājan falawlā tashkurūna
70. If We willed, We could make it bitter, so why are you not grateful?
أَفَرَءَيْتُمُ ٱلنَّارَ ٱلَّتِى تُورُونَ ٧١
afara-aytumu l-nāra allatī tūrūna
71. And have you seen the fire that you ignite?
ءَأَنتُمْ أَنشَأْتُمْ شَجَرَتَهَآ أَمْ نَحْنُ ٱلْمُنشِـُٔونَ ٧٢
a-antum anshatum shajaratahā am naḥnu l-munshiūna
72. Is it you who produced its tree, or are We the producer?
نَحْنُ جَعَلْنَٰهَا تَذْكِرَةً وَمَتَٰعًا لِّلْمُقْوِينَ ٧٣
naḥnu jaʿalnāhā tadhkiratan wamatāʿan lil'muq'wīna
73. We have made it a reminder1616 and provision for the travelers,1617
Notes
[1616] Of the great fire of Hell.
[1617] In the form of flints or other means by which to ignite fire. Travelers are mentioned because of the special convenience to them, although it is a provision for all people in general.
فَسَبِّحْ بِٱسْمِ رَبِّكَ ٱلْعَظِيمِ ٧٤
fasabbiḥ bi-is'mi rabbika l-ʿaẓīmi
74. So exalt the name of your Lord, the Most Great.
فَلَآ أُقْسِمُ بِمَوَٰقِعِ ٱلنُّجُومِ ٧٥
falā uq'simu bimawāqiʿi l-nujūmi
75. Then I swear by the setting of the stars,1618
Notes
[1618] Allāh (subḥānahu wa taʿālā) confirms absolutely by oath.
وَإِنَّهُۥ لَقَسَمٌ لَّوْ تَعْلَمُونَ عَظِيمٌ ٧٦
wa-innahu laqasamun law taʿlamūna ʿaẓīmun
76. And indeed, it is an oath - if you could know - [most] great.
إِنَّهُۥ لَقُرْءَانٌ كَرِيمٌ ٧٧
innahu laqur'ānun karīmun
77. Indeed, it is a noble Qur’ān.
فِى كِتَٰبٍ مَّكْنُونٍ ٧٨
fī kitābin maknūnin
78. In a Register well-protected;1619.
Notes
[1619] The Preserved Slate (al-Lawḥ al-Maḥfūẓ), which is with Allāh (subḥānahu wa taʿālā).
لَّا يَمَسُّهُۥٓ إِلَّا ٱلْمُطَهَّرُونَ ٧٩
lā yamassuhu illā l-muṭaharūna
79. None touch it except the purified [i.e., the angels].
تَنزِيلٌ مِّن رَّبِّ ٱلْعَٰلَمِينَ ٨٠
tanzīlun min rabbi l-ʿālamīna
80. [It is] a revelation from the Lord of the worlds.
أَفَبِهَٰذَا ٱلْحَدِيثِ أَنتُم مُّدْهِنُونَ ٨١
afabihādhā l-ḥadīthi antum mud'hinūna
81. Then is it to this statement that you are indifferent
وَتَجْعَلُونَ رِزْقَكُمْ أَنَّكُمْ تُكَذِّبُونَ ٨٢
watajʿalūna riz'qakum annakum tukadhibūna
82. And make [the thanks for] your provision that you deny [the Provider]?
فَلَوْلَآ إِذَا بَلَغَتِ ٱلْحُلْقُومَ ٨٣
falawlā idhā balaghati l-ḥul'qūma
83. Then why, when it [i.e., the soul at death] reaches the throat
وَأَنتُمْ حِينَئِذٍ تَنظُرُونَ ٨٤
wa-antum ḥīna-idhin tanẓurūna
84. And you are at that time looking on -
وَنَحْنُ أَقْرَبُ إِلَيْهِ مِنكُمْ وَلَٰكِن لَّا تُبْصِرُونَ ٨٥
wanaḥnu aqrabu ilayhi minkum walākin lā tub'ṣirūna
85. And We [i.e., Our angels] are nearer to him than you, but you do not see -
فَلَوْلَآ إِن كُنتُمْ غَيْرَ مَدِينِينَ ٨٦
falawlā in kuntum ghayra madīnīna
86. Then why do you not, if you are not to be recompensed,
تَرْجِعُونَهَآ إِن كُنتُمْ صَٰدِقِينَ ٨٧
tarjiʿūnahā in kuntum ṣādiqīna
87. Bring it back,1620 if you should be truthful?
Notes
[1620] i.e., return the soul to the body, meaning that just as you cannot prevent death when it is decreed, you will not escape the recompense when it is decreed.
فَأَمَّآ إِن كَانَ مِنَ ٱلْمُقَرَّبِينَ ٨٨
fa-ammā in kāna mina l-muqarabīna
88. And if he [i.e., the deceased] was of those brought near [to Allāh],
فَرَوْحٌ وَرَيْحَانٌ وَجَنَّتُ نَعِيمٍ ٨٩
farawḥun warayḥānun wajannatu naʿīmin
89. Then [for him is] rest and bounty and a garden of pleasure.
وَأَمَّآ إِن كَانَ مِنْ أَصْحَٰبِ ٱلْيَمِينِ ٩٠
wa-ammā in kāna min aṣḥābi l-yamīni
90. And if he was of the companions of the right,
فَسَلَٰمٌ لَّكَ مِنْ أَصْحَٰبِ ٱلْيَمِينِ ٩١
fasalāmun laka min aṣḥābi l-yamīni
91. Then [the angels will say], "Peace for you; [you are] from the companions of the right."
وَأَمَّآ إِن كَانَ مِنَ ٱلْمُكَذِّبِينَ ٱلضَّآلِّينَ ٩٢
wa-ammā in kāna mina l-mukadhibīna l-ḍālīna
92. But if he was of the deniers [who were] astray,
فَنُزُلٌ مِّنْ حَمِيمٍ ٩٣
fanuzulun min ḥamīmin
93. Then [for him is] accommodation of scalding water
وَتَصْلِيَةُ جَحِيمٍ ٩٤
wataṣliyatu jaḥīmin
94. And burning in Hellfire.
إِنَّ هَٰذَا لَهُوَ حَقُّ ٱلْيَقِينِ ٩٥
inna hādhā lahuwa ḥaqqu l-yaqīni
95. Indeed, this is the true certainty,
فَسَبِّحْ بِٱسْمِ رَبِّكَ ٱلْعَظِيمِ ٩٦
fasabbiḥ bi-is'mi rabbika l-ʿaẓīmi
96. So exalt the name of your Lord, the Most Great.
