Choose a phrase (SubhanAllah, istighfar, salawat on the Prophetโฆ) or a sequence such as the tasbeeh after salah.
Say the phrase, then tap the beads: each tap fills one bead. Your phone vibrates on each bead and longer when the goal is reached; sound is off by default.
Go full screen to count without looking: the whole screen counts and stays on. Your count is saved: close the page and carry on later.
On a keyboard: Space or Enter to count, Backspace to undo, F for full screen, Esc to leave it.
The phrases of dhikr: meaning, number and virtue
The Arabic text and the virtues come from the Fortress of the Muslim (Hisn al-Muslim); the links lead to the hadiths in their collections.
Saโd said: โWe were sitting with the Messenger of Allah , and he said: โAre any of you unable to gain a thousand good deeds each day?โ Somebody then asked him : How does one achieve a thousand good deeds? He replied: โHe should say: (How perfect Allah is.) one hundred times, for a thousand good deeds are recorded for him or a thousand bad deeds are wiped away.
Jabir Ibn โสฟAbdullah related that the Messenger of Allah said: โVerily, the best supplication is: (All praise is for Allah.) and indeed, the best form of remembrance is: (None has the right to be worshipped except Allah.)
Aboo Hurayrah reported that the Messenger of Allah said: โSaying: (How perfect Allah is, and all praise is for Allah. None has the right to be worshipped except Allah, and Allah is the greatest.) is more beloved to me than everything the sun has risen over.
(He also said: โverily my heart becomes preoccupied, and verily I seek Allahโs forgiveness a hundred times a day.)(preoccupied: i.e. in a state of โforgetfulnessโ. The Prophet always used to increase in his remembrance of his Lord, in attaining a nearness to Allah and having consciousness of Allah to the extent that if this intensity lessened in anyway, he would regard it as a sin and would then race to seek forgiveness from Allah.)
Allฤhumma แนฃalli wa sallim สฟalฤ nabiyyinฤ Muแธฅammad
O Allah, send prayers and peace upon our Prophet Muhammad
The Sunnah sets no number for this phrase: the goal is yours.
The Fortress of the Muslim also cites โten times in the morning and ten times in the eveningโ, with the promise of the Prophetโs ๏ทบ intercession (al-Tabarani); the chain of this hadith is disputed (broken according to several scholars), so the number is not presented here as an established Sunnah. The merit of sending prayers on the Prophet ๏ทบ is certain: โWhoever sends one prayer on me, Allah sends ten on himโ (Muslim 408).
Whoever says:(How perfect Allah is and I praise Him.) a hundred times during the day, his sins are wiped away, even if they are like the foam of the sea.
Jabir Ibn โสฟAbdullah related that the Messenger of Allah said: โVerily, the best supplication is: (All praise is for Allah.) and indeed, the best form of remembrance is: (None has the right to be worshipped except Allah.)
Lฤ ilฤha illฤ llฤh, waแธฅdahu lฤ sharฤซka lah, lahu l-mulku wa lahu l-แธฅamd, wa huwa สฟalฤ kulli shayสพin qadฤซr
None has the right to be worshipped except Allah, alone, without partner; to Him belong all sovereignty and praise, and He is over all things omnipotent
Abu Hurayrah reported that the Messenger of Allah said: โWhoever says: (None has the right to be worshipped except Allah, alone, without partner. To Him belongs all sovereignty and praise and He is over all things omnipotent.) a hundred times during the day, has the reward of freeing ten slaves, a hundred good deeds are recorded for him and a hundred bad deeds are wiped away and he has gained refuge from the devil that day until evening and none shall come with anything better except someone who has done more.
สฟAbdullah Ibn Qays related that the Prophet said to him: โ O โสฟAbdullah Ibn Qays, shall I not inform you of a treasure from the treasures of paradise?โ He then said: โSay: (There is no might nor power except with Allah.)
Aboo Hurayrah reported that the Messenger of Allah said:โ(There are) Two words, (which are ) light on the tongue, heavy on the Scale and beloved to The Most Gracious: (How perfect Allah is and I praise Him. How perfect Allah is, The Supreme.)
Aboo Hurayrah reported that the Messenger of Allah said: โSaying: (How perfect Allah is, and all praise is for Allah. None has the right to be worshipped except Allah, and Allah is the greatest.) is more beloved to me than everything the sun has risen over.
Ibn สฟUmar said: It would be counted that the Messenger of Allah would say one hundred times at any one sitting before getting up: (O my Lord, forgive me and turn towards me (to accept my repentance). Verily You are The Oft-Returning. The Oft-Forgiving.)
Lฤ ilฤha illฤ anta subแธฅฤnak, innฤซ kuntu mina แบ-แบฤlimฤซn
None has the right to be worshipped except You; how perfect You are, I was among the wrongdoers
The Sunnah sets no number for this phrase: the goal is yours.
The supplication of Yunus (peace be upon him) in the belly of the whale (al-Anbiya 21:87). The Prophet ๏ทบ said: โNo Muslim ever supplicates with it for anything without Allah answering himโ (at-Tirmidhi 3505, authentic).
แธคasbiya llฤhu lฤ ilฤha illฤ huwa, สฟalayhi tawakkaltu wa huwa rabbu l-สฟarshi l-สฟaแบฤซm
Allah is sufficient for me; none has the right to be worshipped except Him; upon Him I rely and He is Lord of the exalted Throne
The Sunnah sets no number for this phrase: the goal is yours.
These words close Surah at-Tawbah (9:129). The Fortress of the Muslim cites them seven times morning and evening with the promise โAllah will suffice him in what concerns himโ (Ibn as-Sunni 71; Abu Dawud 5081, as a saying of Abu ad-Dardaโ). Its authenticity is disputed: the Arnaโuts authenticated the chain of the Companionโs saying, while al-Albani judged the version attributed to the Prophet ๏ทบ fabricated and the Companionโs saying weak as well, so the number is not presented here as an established Sunnah.
Allah is Sufficient for me, none has the right to be worshipped except Him, upon Him I rely and He is Lord of the exalted throne.โ (Recite seven times in Arabic.)
Subแธฅฤna llฤhi wa bi-แธฅamdih, สฟadada khalqih, wa riแธฤ nafsih, wa zinata สฟarshih, wa midฤda kalimฤtih
How perfect Allah is and I praise Him, by the number of His creation, His pleasure, the weight of His Throne and the ink of His words
In the Sunnah: 3 in the morning.
The Prophet ๏ทบ said to Juwayriyah, who had been remembering Allah since the dawn prayer: โAfter leaving you I said four phrases three times; if they were weighed against all you have said today, they would outweigh itโ (Muslim 2726).
(How perfect Allah is and I praise Him by the number of His creation and His pleasure, and by the weight of His throne, and the ink of His words.)(three times)
O Allah, You are the One who pardons and You love to pardon, so pardon me
The Sunnah sets no number for this phrase: the goal is yours.
The Prophet ๏ทบ taught it to โAโishah when she asked what to say if she knew which night is Laylat al-Qadr (at-Tirmidhi 3513, Ibn Majah 3850; graded authentic by al-Albani). No number is set for it.
After every obligatory prayer, the Prophet ๏ทบ taught us to glorify Allah, praise Him and declare His greatness, with a promised reward. Several authentic versions exist; the counter lets you choose:
33 ยท 33 ยท 33 ยท 1 (Fortress of the Muslim) โ 33 SubhanAllah, 33 Alhamdulillah, 33 Allahu Akbar, then once โLa ilaha illallahu wahdahuโฆโ to complete one hundred.
Muslim 597a
33 ยท 33 ยท 34 โ 33 SubhanAllah, 33 Alhamdulillah and 34 Allahu Akbar.
Muslim 596a
How perfect Allah is, all praise is for Allah, and Allah is the greatest.(thirty-three times) (None has the right to be worshipped except Allah, alone, without partner, to Him belongs all sovereignty and praise and He is over all things omnipotent.)
The counter moves on to the next phrase by itself and stops at the end, so that the number of the Sunnah is kept. The other remembrances after salah (istighfar, Ayat al-Kursi, al-Ikhlas and the two protective surahs) are on the โAdhkar after salahโ page, with their audio and a guided session.
In what order?
These are the main remembrances after the salam, in the order of the Fortress of the Muslim:
โAstaghfirullahโ three times, then โAllahumma anta s-salam wa minka s-salam, tabarakta ya dha l-jalali wa l-ikramโ (Muslim 591, 592).
โLa ilaha illallahu wahdahu la sharika lah, lahu l-mulku wa lahu l-hamdu wa huwa โala kulli shayโin qadirโ and โAllahumma la maniโa lima aโtaytaโฆโ (al-Bukhari 844, Muslim 593).
The tasbih: 33 SubhanAllah, 33 Alhamdulillah, 33 Allahu Akbar, then โLa ilaha illallahu wahdahuโฆโ to complete one hundred (Muslim 597); this is the counterโs sequence.
Surahs al-Ikhlas, al-Falaq and an-Nas (Abu Dawud 1523).
After Fajr and Maghrib: โLa ilaha illallahu wahdahuโฆ yuhyi wa yumitโฆโ ten times (at-Tirmidhi 3474 for Fajr, 3534 for Maghrib).
No text imposes an order between these remembrances. In Turkey, in the common practice (namaz tesbihatฤฑ), Ayat al-Kursi is recited before the tasbih, followed by a personal dua.
Ramadan is the month of fasting, of the Qurโan and of supplication. โAโishah asked the Prophet ๏ทบ what she should say if she found Laylat al-Qadr; he replied: โSay: Allahumma innaka โafuwwun tuhibbu l-โafwa faโfu โanniโ (O Allah, You are the One who pardons and You love to pardon, so pardon me; at-Tirmidhi 3513, Ibn Majah 3850). You will find it among the counterโs phrases.
Set a daily goal for the month (a hundred istighfar, salawat on the Prophet ๏ทบ or your own dhikr): the days you reach it are shown, and a Ramadan challenge awaits you among your badges. To read the whole Qurโan during the month, the Ramadan khatma plan divides the reading day by day, and the dua for breaking the fast is in the Fortress of the Muslim.
Counting on the fingers, with beads or with a counter?
The Prophet ๏ทบ counted the tasbih on his fingers (Abu Dawud 1502, al-Tirmidhi 3486) and told women to count on their fingertips, โfor they will be questioned and made to speakโ (Abu Dawud 1501). Counting on the fingers is therefore the Sunnah, and best for whoever can.
A common way of counting on the fingers: the thumb touches the joints of the other fingers of the right hand one after another, one phrase per joint. No text sets the method.
Counting with date stones, pebbles or prayer beads is allowed according to most scholars of the four schools: a hadith reports that the Prophet ๏ทบ saw a woman counting with date stones or pebbles and, without forbidding her, taught her an easier or better formula (Abu Dawud 1500, al-Tirmidhi 3568; graded hasan by al-Tirmidhi, weak by others because one narrator, Khuzaymah, is unknown), and some Companions counted that way. Ibn Taymiyyah judged beads good with a good intention and blameworthy when shown off (Majmuโ al-Fatawa 22/506); Dar al-Ifta of Egypt considers them recommended as a means of dhikr and has no objection to electronic counters. Ibn Baz and Ibn Uthaymin allow them but prefer the fingers, while al-Albani considered prayer beads an innovation.
A counter does not replace the phrase: dhikr is said with the tongue, at least quietly, with a present heart. It helps with long series (a hundred istighfar, the tasbeeh after salah) and with regularity; when the Sunnah sets no number, the goal is a personal aid, not a rule. Nothing is published: your history stays private.
These explanations and their references are an aid; for a personal question, ask a person of knowledge.
Frequently asked questions
What is a digital tasbih?
It is a counter that replaces the beads of a tasbih (misbaha): each time you say the phrase, you tap the screen and the count goes up. Assabileโs is free, with no ads and no account, keeps your count in your browser and offers the sequences of the Sunnah, such as the tasbeeh after salah.
How many times do you say SubhanAllah after salah?
In the version quoted by the Fortress of the Muslim: SubhanAllah 33 times, Alhamdulillah 33 times, Allahu Akbar 33 times, then once โLa ilaha illallahu wahdahu la sharika lahโฆโ to complete one hundred (Muslim 597). Other authentic versions give Allahu Akbar 34 times (Muslim 596), or each phrase ten times (Abu Dawud 5065, al-Tirmidhi 3410).
Is it allowed to use prayer beads or a digital tasbih?
Counting on the fingers is the Sunnah: that is how the Prophet ๏ทบ counted the tasbih. Most scholars of the four schools also allow prayer beads, and Dar al-Ifta of Egypt allows electronic counters; other scholars prefer the fingers or advise against beads. What matters is saying the phrase with a present heart and without showing off.
Should you count with the right hand?
The Prophet ๏ทบ counted the tasbih on his fingers (Abu Dawud 1502, al-Tirmidhi 3486), with his right hand according to a version graded authentic by al-Albani. He said of the fingers: โThey will be questioned and made to speakโ (Abu Dawud 1501).
Is my count saved? Do I need an account?
No account is needed: the current count, your history and your own dhikr stay in this browser, on this device. With a free account they are also saved and found again on your other devices. In private browsing, nothing is kept once the page is closed.
Does the tasbih work offline?
Yes: after a first visit while online, this page opens and counts without internet on the same device and browser (bookmark it or add it to your home screen). Your count is kept in the browser; with an account, it reaches your other devices once you are back online.
Can you do dhikr without wudu or during menstruation?
Yes: al-Nawawi reports the agreement of scholars that dhikr, with the heart and the tongue, is allowed for someone without wudu or in a state of janabah and for a menstruating woman (al-Adhkar). The phrases are said with the tongue, even quietly.
What is the tasbih of Fatimah?
It is the tasbih the Prophet ๏ทบ taught his daughter Fatimah and Ali for bedtime: SubhanAllah 33 times, Alhamdulillah 33 times and Allahu Akbar 34 times, โbetter for you than a servantโ (al-Bukhari 3113, Muslim 2727). It is in the โBefore sleepingโ sequence.
