How the direction is calculated

The bearing is that of the great circle, the shortest path on the Earth’s surface between the location and the Kaaba (21.4225° N, 39.8262° E). On an ordinary flat map this path looks curved: from Europe the qibla is southeast rather than due east, and from North America it is northeast.

Every day, at certain times, the Sun is exactly in line with the qibla: the shadow of a vertical stick then points away from the Kaaba. City pages give these times.

Twice a year the Sun passes directly over Makkah: on May 28, 2027 at 09:18 UTC and on July 16, 2027 at 09:27 UTC. At those moments, wherever it is daytime, the shadow of a vertical object points away from the qibla.
