Description

About Surat Al Imran

Al Imran is the third Surah in the Quran. It comes after Surat Al Baqara, and before Surat Al Nisaa. It is a Medinan Surah that contains 200 verses, 3503 words and 14605 letters. It was called by this name in relation to the “Al Imran” who were selected by Allah and preferred over the others.

Reasons of its descent

The scholars see that a large part of Surat Al Imran came down because of a delegation from the Christians of Najran who came to Muhammad PBUH and entered the mosque after the ASR prayer. The Prophet asked two of their masters to convert to Islam, and they said, “we were Muslims before you”. Muhammad PBUH answered: “You lied, you are forbidden from Islam because you pretend that Allah has a child, you worship the cross and you eat pork”. They said if Issa is not the son of Allah, who is his father? So, Allah answered their questions with the revelation of Surat Al Imran.

Its content

The content of this surah is based on two main axes: belief and jihad. In this Surah, the position of the Islamic faith and its significance are emphasized through a comprehensive inventory of evidence that indicates the oneness of Allah and the truth of the Prophet Muhammad PBUH. It also emphasizes the importance of jihad in the cause of Allah to spread his word and his religion. In addition, the Surah includes a warning of the arrogance and disdain against people and to watch out from the lusts of life. This Surah proves the truthfulness of Islam and the difference between the ranks of the messengers of Allah by mentioning three important stories: the story of the birth of Mary, the story of the birth of Yahya, and the story of the birth of Jesus.

Its features

Surat Al Imran uses linguistic and logical methods that suit and reinforce its content. In the same context, there is a repeated use of the methods of storytelling, examples and morals, logical thinking and an appeal to address Jews and Christians sometimes, and Muslim believers in other times. The reason for this is to convince people with the truthfulness of Islam and to encourage Muslims to fight for their religion. One of the characteristics of Surat Al Imran is the way the stories that are mentioned in other verses are introduced in it, in a way that goes hand in hand with the subject of the Surah and with the relevance of its stories such as the story of Jesus, etc.

Its advantages

One of the virtues of Surat Al-Imran, alongside with Surat Al Baqara, is that they help their readers on the Day of Judgment. As Muhammad PBUH said: “Recite the Qur'an, for on the Day of Resurrection it will come as an intercessor for those who recite It. Recite the two bright ones, al-Baqara and Surah Al 'Imran, for on the Day of Resurrection they will come as two clouds or two shades, or two flocks of birds in ranks, pleading for those who recite them. Recite Surah al-Baqara, for to take recourse to it is a blessing and to give it up is a cause of grief, and the magicians cannot confront it”. And also, “On the Day of Resurrection the Qur'an and those who acted according to it will be brought with Surah al-Baqara and AI 'Imran preceding them”.
