Recitation: Mahmoud Khalil Al-Hussary · 24 voices to choose from

Explanation of the name Al-Halim

The One Who bestows favours, both outward and inward, lavishly to His creation despite their many acts of disobedience and transgression. He is gentle upon those that disobey him and in censuring them so that perchance they may repent, and gives them respite so that they may become sorrowful.

"And know that Allaah Knows what is in your minds, so fear Him. And know that Allaah is Oft-Forgiving, the Forebearing." (2:235)

"If you lend to Allaah a goodly loan He will double it for you and will forgive you. Allaah is the appreciative and rewarding, the Forebearing." (65:17)

— ‘Abd al-Rahman al-Sa‘di

The Exalted, said; “And Allah is Rich (Free of all needs) and He is Most-Forbearing.” (Al-Baqrah: 263)

The Linguistic Meaning:

Al-Haleem: The extreme of forbearing.

He is the Most Forbearing, possessing complete ability to forgive, being able to pardon the unfaithful slave and the disbelievers, forbidding His Immediate Punishment from reaching the oppressors, for He is Patient with them but not forgetting them. He is Able to pardon in spite of His Perfect Ability to punish. He is Forbearing towards disobedient slaves that He provides them - with obedient slaves - multiple graces. He waits for the disobedient slaves until they return to the truth and faith. And without His Forgiveness, the heavens and the earth would have perished, as He, the Exalted, said: “ Verily! Allah grasps the heavens and the earth lest they should move away from their places, and if they were to move away from their places, there is not one that could grasp them after Him. Truly, He is Ever Most Forbearing, Oft- Forgiving ”. (Fatir: 41). He is Most Forbearing, gives His slaves abundance and yet they don’t thank Him, and still He doesn’t punish them or harm them. This sublime Lordly act may teach the creatures to learn from His Pardoning, to not harm those who are ungrateful to them.

The Grandeur of Al-Haleem

No one is more patient or more pardoning than Him All-Mighty, for He postpones this life’s punishment over the disbelievers, as they enjoy His Graces and Luxuries, peace be upon him said: “No one is patient about the harm that is heard more than God, they make a parallel to Him, they make a son of Him and yet He provides them with abundance, health and gifts.”

He shows the slave how pardoning and generous He is, for He conceals the sins, and guards the slave in spite of his disobedience; therefore, this must be the highest and grandest of all types of forbearing.

Allāh does not impose blame upon you for what is unintentional in your oaths, but He imposes blame upon you for what your hearts have earned. And Allāh is Forgiving and Forbearing.

Explanation: Al-Mukhtasar

Allah will not take you to account for those oaths that you swear unintentionally, such as if someone carelessly says, ‘No, by Allah!’ or ‘Yes, by Allah!’ For such oaths there is no need to make any compensation, nor any further consequences. However, He will take you to account for intentional oaths. Allah forgives and tolerates the sins of His servants and is not hasty in sending punishment.

Surah Al-Baqarah, Verse 225

There is no blame upon you for that to which you [indirectly] allude concerning a proposal to women or for what you conceal within yourselves. Allāh knows that you will have them in mind. But do not promise them secretly except for saying a proper saying. And do not determine to undertake a marriage contract until the decreed period reaches its end. And know that Allāh knows what is within yourselves, so beware of Him. And know that Allāh is Forgiving and Forbearing.

Explanation: Al-Mukhtasar

There is no sin on you if you hint to your desire to propose to a woman who is still in her waiting period after a divorce or after the death of her husband. For example, a person may say, ‘When your waiting period is over, let me know’. There is also no sin on you if you keep this desire to yourselves. Allah knows that you will mention them because of your strong desire to marry, so He has allowed you to give a hint without being open. Beware of secretly making any promise to marry them whilst they are still in their waiting period. However, you may give a hint to them in the manner that is acceptable; but do not confirm the marriage contract in the period of waiting. Know that Allah is aware of what is in your hearts, so be mindful of Him and do not go against His instruction. Know that Allah Forgiving to the person who repents to Him; and that He is tolerant and does not often quickly punish.

Surah Al-Baqarah, Verse 235

Kind speech and forgiveness are better than charity followed by injury. And Allāh is Free of need and Forbearing.

Explanation: Al-Mukhtasar

A kind word that makes a believer happy or forgiveness of the one who is ill-mannered is better than charity followed by harm caused by reminding the person of the favour. Allah is in no need of His servants; and because He is tolerant with them, He does not often quickly punish.

Surah Al-Baqarah, Verse 263

Indeed, those of you who turned back on the day the two armies met [at Uḥud] - it was Satan who caused them to slip because of some [blame] they had earned. But Allāh has already forgiven them. Indeed, Allāh is Forgiving and Forbearing.

Explanation: Al-Mukhtasar

Those of you who were defeated, O Companions of Muhammad (peace be upon him), on the day the army of the idolaters and the army of the Muslims met at Uḥud, it was Satan who made you slip, because of what you had earned from doing wrong. Allah has forgiven them, and will not take them to account for it, out of His favour and mercy. Allah forgives those who repent to Him, and is Forbearing, not quick to punish.
