Explanation of the name Al-Ghaniyy

He is Self-Sufficient, completely and unrestrictedly, deference is given to His perfection and the perfection of His Attributes. He has absolutely no deficiency of any kind; it is not possible that He be anything but Self-Sufficient, for self-sufficiency is from the necessary consequences of His Essence. Similarly it is not possible for Him to be anything but the Creator, the All-Powerful, the Provider and the Bestower of good. He is not in need of anything or anyone, He is the Self-Sufficient in Whose Hand lie the treasures of the heavens and the earth, and the treasures of this life and the Hereafter. He suffices for the whole of His creation generally, and is specifically sufficient for the believers in that He confers upon their hearts nurturing knowledge and the realities of faith.

"Kind words and forgiving faults are better than giving in charity. Allaah is the Rich, the Forebearing." (2:263)

"And your Lord is Self-Sufficient, full of Mercy. If He Will He could destroy you and out in your place make who He Will to be successors, just as He raised you from the seed of another people." (6:133)

— ‘Abd al-Rahman al-Sa‘di · Explanation shared with: Al-Mughni

The Exalted said: “O mankind! It is you who stand in need of Allah. But Allah is Rich (Free of all needs), Worthy of all praise.” (Fatir: 15)

The Linguistic Meaning:

Al-Ghaniyy: Who is not in need of anyone for anything.

The Exalted is the Rich: Who has ultimate wealth and riches, for He is Rich in His Essence and everything else is in constant need of Him, as He is Self-Sufficient to the extent that the obedience of obedient slaves cannot benefit Him, and the sins of disobedient slaves cannot harm Him. He is so Self-Sufficient that He didn’t get a companion or a son or a partner in His Dominion. He enriches His creation with complete abundance, and even enriches His creatures’ hearts with divine knowledge and faith.

The Grandeur of Al-Ghaniyy:

He is Gloriously Rich that His Dominion cannot be diminished no matter how much He gives and provides, He, the Exalted said in Hadeeth Al-Qudsi: “O My slaves, if the first and last person of you, and your humans and jinn, asked Me -while all of you are standing up in one locationand if I responded and gave each one of you his need, that wouldn’t diminish what I have (own).”

The name in the Quran

This name occurs in 18 verses of 16 surahs.

Kind speech and forgiveness are better than charity followed by injury. And Allāh is Free of need and Forbearing.

Explanation: Al-Mukhtasar

A kind word that makes a believer happy or forgiveness of the one who is ill-mannered is better than charity followed by harm caused by reminding the person of the favour. Allah is in no need of His servants; and because He is tolerant with them, He does not often quickly punish.

Surah Al-Baqarah, Verse 263

O you who have believed, spend from the good things which you have earned and from that which We have produced for you from the earth. And do not aim toward the defective therefrom, spending [from that] while you would not take it [yourself] except with closed eyes. And know that Allāh is Free of need and Praiseworthy.

Explanation: Al-Mukhtasar

O you who have faith in Allah and follow His Messenger, spend from the pure, wholesome wealth that you have earned and from the produce that we have taken out for you from the ground. Do not look for that which is inferior to spend, because if it was given to you, you would not take it willingly because of its poor quality. How, then, can you be satisfied with offering Allah that which you would not accept for yourselves? Know that Allah is no need of your spending and He is praised in His essence and actions.

Surah Al-Baqarah, Verse 267

In it are clear signs [such as] the standing place of Abraham. And whoever enters it [i.e., the Ḥaram] shall be safe. And [due] to Allāh from the people is a pilgrimage to the House - for whoever is able to find thereto a way. But whoever disbelieves [i.e., refuses] - then indeed, Allāh is free from need of the worlds.

Explanation: Al-Mukhtasar

In this place of worship are clear signs of its special honour and blessings, such as the acts of worship performed in it, and its landmarks, including the stone that Abraham stood on when he was raising the walls of the Kaaba; and whoever enters it is safe, with no harm coming to them. People have a duty to Allah to perform the acts of Hajj in this House of worship, if they are able to do so. Whoever rejects the duty of Hajj disbelieves in Allah, and Allah is in no need of them or anything all in the worlds.

Surah Ali ’Imran, Verse 97

And to Allāh belongs whatever is in the heavens and whatever is on the earth. And We have instructed those who were given the Scripture before you and yourselves to fear Allāh. But if you disbelieve - then to Allāh belongs whatever is in the heavens and whatever is on the earth. And ever is Allāh Free of need and Praiseworthy.

Explanation: Al-Mukhtasar

The dominion of everything in the heavens and the earth, and all that is between them, is Allah’s alone. He had instructed the People of the Scripture, the Jews and Christians, and has instructed you, O believers, to fulfil Allah’s orders and avoid His prohibitions. If you reject this instruction you only harm yourselves, because Allah is in no need of your obedience, as everything in the heavens and earth is His. He is in no need of any of His creation. He is the One Who is praised for all His attributes and actions.
