Explanation of the name Al-Hafiz

The One Who protects and preserves what He created and Whose Knowledge encompasses all that He brought into existence. The One Who protects His friends from falling into sins and the destructive matters. The One Who is Kind to them during their periods of activity and rest. The One Who accounts the actions of the servants and their rewards.

"And Iblees did prove true his thought about them, and they followed him, all except a group of the true believers. And Iblees had no authority over them - except that We might test he who believes in the Hereafter from him who is in doubt about it. And your Lord is the Guardian over everything." (34:20-21)

"As for those who take friends and protectors besides Him - Allaah is the Guardian over them and you are not a disposer of their affairs." (42:6)

— ‘Abd al-Rahman al-Sa‘di

He, the Exalted said:

“Surely, my Lord is Guardian over all things.” (Hud: 57)

The Linguistic Meaning:

Preserving the thing, maintaining it and not forgetting.

God, is Al-Hafeedh: Who guards the heavens and the earth, and all that is amongst them, forbidding them their demise until a specific date, He said: “ Verily! Allah grasps the heavens and the earth lest they should move away from their places.” (Fatir: 41).

He, the Exalted, preserves the deeds of the slaves and what evil or good things they did; He saves His slaves from destructive results; He preserves His believers from committing grave sins, from harming their belief, and He strengthens their certainty away from doubt, suspicion and wrong desires.

The Grandeur of Al-Hafeedh

God, All-Mighty, preserves all things, keeping their nature and description. He is able to maintain the paradoxes and contradictions, as in the case of fire and water, for they are contrary to each other: the water can distinguish the fire or the fire can evaporate the water transforming it into vapor. God has combined contrasts in all elements and components, and in all living organisms such as humans, plants and animals. Without His Ability to preserve and control these factors, these elements would move away from one another, and shrink in their composition, and these are the factors that preserve the human being from total destruction and secure his life by way of God’s Preserving Ability.

— Maher bin Moqaddam

The name in the Quran

This name occurs in 3 verses of 3 surahs.

But if you turn away, then I have already conveyed that with which I was sent to you. My Lord will give succession to a people other than you, and you will not harm Him at all. Indeed my Lord is, over all things, Guardian."

Explanation: Al-Mukhtasar

He told them that if they continued to turn away from what he brought them, then he had no responsibility to do more than convey the message to them. He had delivered to them everything that Allah had sent him with and instructed him to convey. The proof would be against them, and his Lord would destroy them and bring another people to succeed them. They would not do Allah the slightest harm through their rejecting and turning away, because He has no need of His creation. He told them that his Lord watches over all things, and that it was He Who protected him from the evil they plotted against him.

Surah Hud, Verse 57

And he had over them no authority except [it was decreed] that We might make evident who believes in the Hereafter from who is thereof in doubt. And your Lord, over all things, is Guardian.

Explanation: Al-Mukhtasar

And Iblis has no power over them through which he can force them to be misguided, but he only beautifies for them to entice them to lead them astray. We have given him permission to entice so we can make it clear the one who has faith in the Hereafter from the one who is in doubt about the Hereafter. And your Lord, O Messenger, is a Guardian over everything. He guards the actions of His servants and will reward them for them.

Surah Saba, Verse 21

And those who take as allies other than Him - Allāh is [yet] Guardian over them; and you, [O Muḥammad], are not over them a manager -

Explanation: Al-Mukhtasar

Those who take idols besides Allah whom they align with and worship besides Allah, Allah lies in wait for them. He records their actions and He will recompense them for that. You, O Messenger, are not in charge of them and you will not be questioned about their actions. You are only one who conveys the message.
