Explanation of the name Al-Wakil

The One Who has the responsibility to dispose the affairs of the creation in accordance with His Knowledge, perfect Power and all-encompassing Wisdom. The One who looks after His friends and makes the good easy for them, preserves them from the evil and suffices for them in all of their affairs. Therefore the one who takes Him as One to be relied upon, He suffices him

"Allaah is the Friend of those who believe, He guides them from the darknesses into the light." (2:257)

"Such is Allaah your Lord! None has the right to be worshipped but He, the Creator of all things. So worship Him Alone, and He is the Disposer of all affairs." (6:102)

"And put your trust in Allaah, and Allaah is Sufficient as a Disposer of Affairs." (39:62)

— ‘Abd al-Rahman al-Sa‘di

The Exalted said: “And they said:

“Allah (Alone) is Sufficient for us, and He is the Best Disposer of affairs (for us).” (Al-Imran: 173)

The Linguistic Meaning:

He is entrusted with all affairs for the purpose of guardianship and sufficiency.

God, the Exalted, is Al-Wakeel: He undertook the responsibility of creating, arranging and providing all creatures of the universe, and this is the general responsibility, while the exclusive responsibility is that He is the Helper of the believers, making things easier for them and alleviating them hardship.

The Grandeur of Al-Wakeel

Whoever depends on and entrusts God for all of his affairs, God will alleviate him causes of sadness in this life and in the Hereafter, God said: “ And whosoever puts his trust in Allah, then He will suffice him.” (At-Talaq: 3)

The name in the Quran

This name occurs in 13 verses of 10 surahs.

Those to whom people [i.e., hypocrites] said, "Indeed, the people have gathered against you, so fear them." But it [merely] increased them in faith, and they said, "Sufficient for us is Allāh, and [He is] the best Disposer of affairs."

Explanation: Al-Mukhtasar

Some of the idolaters said to them that the Quraysh, led by Abū Sufyān, had come together in great numbers to fight against them and to finish them off, warning them against meeting them. But their words and attempts to scare them only increased their reliance on Allah and their trust in His promise. So they went out to meet them, saying that Allah was enough for them and that He is the best Protector, while committing their lives to Him.

Surah Ali ’Imran, Verse 173

And they say, "[We pledge] obedience." But when they leave you, a group of them spend the night determining to do other than what you say. But Allāh records what they plan by night. So leave them alone and rely upon Allāh. And sufficient is Allāh as Disposer of affairs.

Explanation: Al-Mukhtasar

The hypocrites say to you, ‘We follow your instruction and we will act with obedience’. Yet when they leave you, a group of them secretly plan the opposite of what they said to you. Allah knows their planning and He will recompense them accordingly. So turn away from them and pay no attention, as they will not harm you at all. Surrender your matter to Allah and rely on Him alone for He is sufficient for you as a Guardian to watch over your affairs and take care of you.

Surah An-Nisa, Verse 81

And to Allāh belongs whatever is in the heavens and whatever is on the earth. And sufficient is Allāh as Disposer of affairs.

Explanation: Al-Mukhtasar

The dominion of everything in the heavens and the earth is Allah’s alone and He alone deserves to be obeyed. Allah is sufficient as One Who takes care of all the affairs of His creation.

Surah An-Nisa, Verse 132

O People of the Scripture, do not commit excess in your religion or say about Allāh except the truth. The Messiah, Jesus the son of Mary, was but a messenger of Allāh and His word which He directed to Mary and a soul [created at a command] from Him. So believe in Allāh and His messengers. And do not say, "Three"; desist - it is better for you. Indeed, Allāh is but one God. Exalted is He above having a son. To Him belongs whatever is in the heavens and whatever is on the earth. And sufficient is Allāh as Disposer of affairs.

Explanation: Al-Mukhtasar

Say, O Messenger, to the Christians who received the Gospel: Do not overstep the limits in your religion and do not say anything but the truth about Allah in relation to Jesus. The Messiah, Jesus, son of Mary, is only Allah’s messenger sent with the truth. He created him by His word which He sent with Gabriel to Mary, which was the word ‘Be’, and he became. It was a breath from Allah which Gabriel blew with Allah’s instruction. So have faith in Allah and all His messengers without making a distinction between them. Do not say, ‘The gods are three’. Avoid saying this false statement and it will be better for you in this world and the Afterlife. Allah is the only One God free of any partner or child. He is Self-sufficient. The dominion of the heavens, the earth and whatever is in between the two is His. He is sufficient as a guardian to carry out the affairs of His creation.
