Explanation of the name Al-Waliyy

The Exalted, said; “And He is the Wali (Helper, Supporter, Protector, Lord), Worthy of all Praise” (Ash-Shura: 28)

And He, the Praiseworthy, said: “Allah is your Maula (Patron, Lord, Protector and Supporter)- (what) an Excellent Maula, and (what) and Excellent Helper!” (Al-Anfal: 40).

The Linguistic Meaning:

Alwaliyy: the near, the helper and the giver of victory.

Almawla: Called on the owner, the giver and the loving person.

God, the Exalted is Al-Waliyy and Al-Mawla: the Protector and Supporter to all of His creation, by His Arrangement and Wisdom, for we have no protector except Him. He gives us benefits and repels harm away from us, all our destiny is in His Hand, and this general protection is for both obedient and disobedient slaves. His Special Protection is for His faithful slaves: He guides them out of darkness into light, gives them victory over their enemy, improves their daily and religious matters, for it is a support that requires sympathy, reform, and mercy, and this special support for them enables them to reform themselves so that they will be close to Him in Paradise.

The Grandeur of Al-Waliyy and Al-Mawla

His Support to His slaves is out of love, closeness, benevolence, and mercy to them, for His Protection and Support is considered as some type of victory, honor and superiority to His slaves.

— Maher bin Moqaddam

He is the guardian who manages everything and disposes of all affairs. Allah, Exalted be He, is the Master of all creation; that is, He is their Creator, Ruler and True God who alone deserves to be worshipped. He loves the believers and provides them with special help and support.

Allāh is the Ally of those who believe. He brings them out from darknesses into the light. And those who disbelieve - their allies are ṭāghūt. They take them out of the light into darknesses. Those are the companions of the Fire; they will abide eternally therein.

Explanation: Al-Mukhtasar

God takes care of those who have faith in Him. He grants them success and victory and takes them out of the darkness of disbelief and ignorance into the light of faith and knowledge. The friends of the disbelievers are Satan and his assistants who make disbelief seem beautiful to them and who take them from the light of faith and knowledge into the darkness of disbelief and ignorance. They are the people of the Fire who will remain there forever. Allah takes care of those who have faith in Him: He gives them success and victory and takes them out of the darkness of disbelief and ignorance into the light of faith and knowledge. The friends of the disbelievers are Satan and his assistants who make disbelief seem beautiful to them, and who take them from the light of faith and knowledge into the darkness of disbelief and ignorance. They are the people of the fire of Hell who will live there eternally.

Surah Al-Baqarah, Verse 257

Indeed, the most worthy of Abraham among the people are those who followed him [in submission to Allāh] and this prophet [i.e., Muḥammad (ﷺ)] and those who believe [in his message]. And Allāh is the Ally of the believers.

The people who are most entitled to claim a link to Abraham are those who followed him in his time, as well as this Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) and those who have faith in him from this nation. Allah helps and protects the believers.

Surah Ali ’Imran, Verse 68

وَٱللَّهُ أَعْلَمُ بِأَعْدَآئِكُمْ وَكَفَىٰ بِٱللَّهِ وَلِيًّا وَكَفَىٰ بِٱللَّهِ نَصِيرًا ۝٤٥

And Allāh is most knowing of your enemies; and sufficient is Allāh as an ally, and sufficient is Allāh as a helper.

Explanation: Al-Mukhtasar

Allah knows your enemies better than you do, O believers, so He informs you of them and makes clear to you that they are against you. Allah is enough as a Protector, keeping you safe from them harming you; and Allah is enough as a Helper, stopping them from plotting against you and from hurting you.

Surah An-Nisa, Verse 45
