Explanation of the name Al-Hasib

The One Who is All-Knowing of His servants and sufficient for those who put their trust in Him. The One Who recompenses his servants with either good or bad in accordance to His Wisdom and His Knowledge of the minutest and greatest of their actions.

"When you are greeted with a greeting, greet in return with what is better than it or at least return it equally. Allaah is the Reckoner of all things." (4:86)

"Those who convey the Message of Allaah and fear Him and none save Him, Sufficient is Allaah as Reckoner." (33:39)

— ‘Abd al-Rahman al-Sa‘di

The Exalted said: “Allah is Ever a Careful Account Taker of all things.” (An-Nisa: 86)

The Linguistic Meaning:

The Generous, the Account Taker and the High in honor.

God, the Praiseworthy, is Al-Haseeb: Who rules among His slaves by justice. His Fairness prevails among all slaves, believers and disbelievers. He is Sufficient for all slaves: General sufficiency: He provides to all slaves the benefits. Special sufficiency: This is for His true followers, who are loyal to Him in their worship.

The Grandeur of Al-Haseeb

Anyone who resorts to God by this Blessed Name, God will be Sufficient for him, alleviating him harms, & hardships, as the Exalted said: “And they said: Allah (Alone) is Sufficient for us, and He is the Best Disposer of affairs (for us). ” (Al-Imran: 173) This was uttered by Abraham when he was thrown in fire, and also uttered by Muhammad P.B.U.H. when the pagans gathered against him; the Exalted said: “ Those (i.e. believers) unto whom the people (hypocrites) said, “Verily, the people (pagans) have gathered against you (a great army), therefore, fear them.” But it (only) increased them in Faith, and they said: “Allah (Alone) is Sufficient us, and He is the Best Disposer of affairs (for us).” (Al-Imran: 173)

The name in the Quran

This name occurs in 3 verses of 2 surahs.

And test the orphans [in their abilities] until they reach marriageable age. Then if you perceive in them sound judgement, release their property to them. And do not consume it excessively and quickly, [anticipating] that they will grow up. And whoever, [when acting as guardian], is self-sufficient should refrain [from taking a fee]; and whoever is poor - let him take according to what is acceptable. Then when you release their property to them, bring witnesses upon them. And sufficient is Allāh as Accountant.

Explanation: Al-Mukhtasar

Guardians, test the orphans when they are near to reaching maturity, by giving them a part of their wealth to see how they manage it. If they manage it well, and show you their sound judgement, hand over their property in full. Do not use up their wealth, overstepping the limits which Allah has approved for you: use their wealth only when necessary. Do not rush to use it up for fear that they will take it when they reach maturity. Whoever is wealthy should not use up the property of the orphan; and whoever is poor and has no wealth should only use what is necessary. When you hand over their property to them, upon their reaching maturity and showing sound judgement, have it witnessed; to protect rights and to prevent causes of disagreement. Allah is sufficient as a witness for that, and takes account of all that people do.

Surah An-Nisa, Verse 6

And when you are greeted with a greeting, greet [in return] with one better than it or [at least] return it [in a like manner]. Indeed Allāh is ever, over all things, an Accountant.

Explanation: Al-Mukhtasar

When anyone offers a greeting of peace to you, then respond to him with something better than what he offered or return a similar greeting to him. To respond with something better is more virtuous. Allah keeps watch over what you do and He will reward each person according to his actions.

Surah An-Nisa, Verse 86

[Allāh praises] those who convey the messages of Allāh and fear Him and do not fear anyone but Allāh. And sufficient is Allāh as Accountant.

Explanation: Al-Mukhtasar

These Prophets who convey the messages of Allah that are revealed to them to their nations, and do not fear anyone except Allah (may He be glorified), they do not pay attention to what others say when they do whatever Allah has permitted for them. Allah is sufficient as a guardian for the actions of His servants so that He may take them to account over them and requite them; if they are good then with good, if evil then with punishment.
