Explanation of the name Al-Muntaqim
Al-Muntaqim is the One Who goes to the utmost in punishing whomever He wills. The word for retribution (intiqam) comes from a verb used when displeasure reaches the degree of wrath (sukht). The name thus describes Him as the Exactor of Retribution, Who punishes in full those whom He wills.

المنتقم: هو الذي يبالغ في العقوبة لمن شاء كقوله [تعالى]: (فلما آسفونا انتقمنا منهم فأغرقناهم أجمعين). والانتقام: افتعال من نقم ينقم إذا بلغت به الكراهة حد السخط.
