بِسْمِ ٱللَّهِ ٱلرَّحْمَٰنِ ٱلرَّحِيمِ
ٱلَّذِى خَلَقَ فَسَوَّىٰ ٢
2. Who created and proportioned
وَٱلَّذِى قَدَّرَ فَهَدَىٰ ٣
3. And who destined and [then] guided
وَٱلَّذِىٓ أَخْرَجَ ٱلْمَرْعَىٰ ٤
4. And who brings out the pasture
فَجَعَلَهُۥ غُثَآءً أَحْوَىٰ ٥
5. And [then] makes it black stubble.
سَنُقْرِئُكَ فَلَا تَنسَىٰٓ ٦
6. We will make you recite, [O Muḥammad], and you will not forget,
إِلَّا مَا شَآءَ ٱللَّهُ إِنَّهُۥ يَعْلَمُ ٱلْجَهْرَ وَمَا يَخْفَىٰ ٧
7. Except what Allāh should will. Indeed, He knows what is declared and what is hidden.
وَنُيَسِّرُكَ لِلْيُسْرَىٰ ٨
8. And We will ease you toward ease.1907
Notes
[1907] To the path of Allāh's religion, which is easy and natural, or toward Paradise, by giving opportunities for righteous deeds.
فَذَكِّرْ إِن نَّفَعَتِ ٱلذِّكْرَىٰ ٩
9. So remind, if the reminder should benefit;1908
Notes
[1908] i.e., wherever it will be heard and understood.
سَيَذَّكَّرُ مَن يَخْشَىٰ ١٠
10. He who fears [Allāh] will be reminded.
وَيَتَجَنَّبُهَا ٱلْأَشْقَى ١١
11. But the wretched one will avoid it –
ٱلَّذِى يَصْلَى ٱلنَّارَ ٱلْكُبْرَىٰ ١٢
12. [He] who will [enter and] burn in the greatest Fire,
ثُمَّ لَا يَمُوتُ فِيهَا وَلَا يَحْيَىٰ ١٣
13. Neither dying therein nor living.
قَدْ أَفْلَحَ مَن تَزَكَّىٰ ١٤
14. He has certainly succeeded who purifies himself
وَذَكَرَ ٱسْمَ رَبِّهِۦ فَصَلَّىٰ ١٥
15. And mentions the name of his Lord and prays.
بَلْ تُؤْثِرُونَ ٱلْحَيَوٰةَ ٱلدُّنْيَا ١٦
16. But you prefer the worldly life,
وَٱلْـَٔاخِرَةُ خَيْرٌ وَأَبْقَىٰٓ ١٧
17. While the Hereafter is better and more enduring.
إِنَّ هَٰذَا لَفِى ٱلصُّحُفِ ٱلْأُولَىٰ ١٨
18. Indeed, this is in the former scriptures,
صُحُفِ إِبْرَٰهِيمَ وَمُوسَىٰ ١٩
19. The scriptures of Abraham and Moses.
Verses not to confuse
3 verses of Surah Al-A’la resemble other verses of the Quran: a classic trap when reciting from memory. The closest ones:

Al-A’la 87:13
ثُمَّ لَا يَمُوتُ فِيهَا وَلَا يَحْيَىٰ
Taha 20:74إِنَّهُۥ مَن يَأْتِ رَبَّهُۥ مُجْرِمًا فَإِنَّ لَهُۥ جَهَنَّمَ لَا يَمُوتُ فِيهَا وَلَا يَحْيَىٰ
-
Al-A’la 87:7
إِلَّا مَا شَآءَ ٱللَّهُ إِنَّهُۥ يَعْلَمُ ٱلْجَهْرَ وَمَا يَخْفَىٰ
Al-An’am 6:128وَيَوْمَ يَحْشُرُهُمْ جَمِيعًا يَٰمَعْشَرَ ٱلْجِنِّ قَدِ ٱسْتَكْثَرْتُم مِّنَ ٱلْإِنسِ وَقَالَ أَوْلِيَآؤُهُم مِّنَ ٱلْإِنسِ رَبَّنَا ٱسْتَمْتَعَ بَعْضُنَا بِبَعْضٍ وَبَلَغْنَآ أَجَلَنَا ٱلَّذِىٓ أَجَّلْتَ لَنَا قَالَ ٱلنَّارُ مَثْوَىٰكُمْ خَٰلِدِينَ فِيهَآ إِلَّا مَا شَآءَ ٱللَّهُ إِنَّ رَبَّكَ حَكِيمٌ عَلِيمٌ

Al-A’la 87:14
قَدْ أَفْلَحَ مَن تَزَكَّىٰ
Ash-Shams 91:9قَدْ أَفْلَحَ مَن زَكَّىٰهَا
Recite what follows from memory. Next verse:

The method in five steps
- Read and listen
Read the portion while following a reciter, verse by verse, until you can say it without hesitation.
- Repeat
Repeat each verse several times with a pause to say it after the reciter, then join the verses together.
- Hide
Hide one word in three, then two in three, then keep only the first letters, and finally the whole text.
- Recite
Recite from memory: get tested on what follows a random verse, record yourself or recite to someone.
- Review
Come back to each portion the next day, then at longer and longer intervals, and review before learning something new.
