بِسْمِ ٱللَّهِ ٱلرَّحْمَٰنِ ٱلرَّحِيمِ

ٱلْقَارِعَةُ ۝١

1. The Striking Calamity -

مَا ٱلْقَارِعَةُ ۝٢

2. What is the Striking Calamity?

وَمَآ أَدْرَىٰكَ مَا ٱلْقَارِعَةُ ۝٣

3. And what can make you know what is the Striking Calamity?

يَوْمَ يَكُونُ ٱلنَّاسُ كَٱلْفَرَاشِ ٱلْمَبْثُوثِ ۝٤

4. It is the Day when people will be like moths, dispersed,¹⁹⁷⁵

Notes

[1975] The people will be as such after having been expelled from their graves.

وَتَكُونُ ٱلْجِبَالُ كَٱلْعِهْنِ ٱلْمَنفُوشِ ۝٥

5. And the mountains will be like wool, fluffed up.¹⁹⁷⁶

Notes

[1976] i.e., beginning to disintegrate.

فَأَمَّا مَن ثَقُلَتْ مَوَٰزِينُهُۥ ۝٦

6. Then as for one whose scales are heavy [with good deeds],

فَهُوَ فِى عِيشَةٍ رَّاضِيَةٍ ۝٧

7. He will be in a pleasant life.

وَأَمَّا مَنْ خَفَّتْ مَوَٰزِينُهُۥ ۝٨

8. But as for one whose scales are light,

فَأُمُّهُۥ هَاوِيَةٌ ۝٩

9. His refuge¹⁹⁷⁷ will be an abyss.¹⁹⁷⁸

Notes

[1977] Literally, "mother" (a man's original refuge) , which will envelop him as in an embrace.
[1978] i.e., the pit of Hellfire.

وَمَآ أَدْرَىٰكَ مَا هِيَهْ ۝١٠

10. And what can make you know what that is?

نَارٌ حَامِيَةٌۢ ۝١١

11. It is a Fire, intensely hot.
