Lut is the Arabic form of the Hebrew Lot, usually explained as “veil, covering”. Arab lexicographers class it among foreign names (like Nuh), even though an Arabic root l-w-ṭ, “to plaster, to cling”, exists. According to tradition, Lut was the nephew of Ibrahim. It is a prophet’s name that is rarely given.
