Hasan in Islam
Al-Hasan ibn ʿAli, son of Fatima and the Prophet’s elder grandson ﷺ, is described with his brother as “the two masters of the youth of Paradise” (al-Tirmidhi 3768). The Prophet ﷺ said of him: “This son of mine is a master, and perhaps Allah will reconcile through him two great groups of Muslims” (al-Bukhari 3746), which came to pass in the year 41 of the Hijra.
Hasan is the adjective from the root h-s-n of beauty and goodness (husn, “beauty”; ihsan, “excellence, doing good”). It describes what is beautiful to see and good in its deeds. The name, rare before Islam, spread in memory of the Prophet’s elder grandson ﷺ, whom he named himself.
Who is it that would loan Allāh a goodly loan so He may multiply it for him many times over? And it is Allāh who withholds and grants abundance, and to Him you will be returned.
So her Lord accepted her with good acceptance and caused her to grow in a good manner and put her in the care of Zechariah. Every time Zechariah entered upon her in the prayer chamber, he found with her provision. He said, "O Mary, from where is this [coming] to you?" She said, "It is from Allāh. Indeed, Allāh provides for whom He wills without account."
And Allāh had already taken a covenant from the Children of Israel, and We delegated from among them twelve leaders. And Allāh said, "I am with you. If you establish prayer and give zakāh and believe in My messengers and support them and loan Allāh a goodly loan, I will surely remove from you your misdeeds and admit you to gardens beneath which rivers flow. But whoever of you disbelieves after that has certainly strayed from the soundness of the way."
And you did not kill them, but it was Allāh who killed them. And you threw not, [O Muḥammad], when you threw, but it was Allāh who threw that He might test the believers with a good test. Indeed, Allāh is Hearing and Knowing.
