Is the reward for good [anything] but good?
Boy Arabic origin Ḥassān
Companion“Very handsome”, one who does good in abundance
Hassan ibn Thabit, an Ansari of the Khazraj tribe, was the poet of the Prophet ﷺ: he answered in verse the poets of Quraysh who attacked Islam. The Prophet ﷺ told him: “Satirise them, and Jibril is with you” (al-Bukhari 3213), and prayed for him: “O Allah, support him with the Holy Spirit” (al-Bukhari 6152).
Hassan (Hassaan) is an intensive form of the root ḥ-s-n of beauty and goodness (ḥusn, iḥsan): “very handsome”, “one who beautifies, who does much good”. Arab grammarians debated its root — ḥ-s-n or, for some, ḥ-s-s (“to feel”) — but most connect it with ḥusn. It belongs to the same family as Hasan, Husayn and Ihsan, but it is a distinct name, with a doubled s and a long a, which is why it is often spelled Hassaan in English.
The name Hassaan does not appear as such in the Quran, but its root (ح س ن) occurs 194 times. Examples:
Is the reward for good [anything] but good?
And spend in the way of Allāh and do not throw [yourselves] with your [own] hands into destruction [by refraining]. And do good; indeed, Allāh loves the doers of good.
Indeed, Allāh orders justice and good conduct and giving [help] to relatives and forbids immorality and bad conduct and oppression. He admonishes you that perhaps you will be reminded.
