The word as it is recited in the Quran: Mahmoud Khalil Al-Hussary, Al-An’am 6:65.
Qadir in Islam
The word occurs fourteen times in the Quran, almost always for Allah: “Say: He is able (al-qadir) to send punishment upon you” (6:65); “Is not He who created the heavens and the earth able to create the like of them?” (36:81). The name is given in its human sense, and ʿAbd al-Qadir is its recommended form.
Meaning of the name Qadir
Qadir is the active participle of qadara, “to be able” (root q-d-r of power, qudra, and of measure, qadr): one who has the power to accomplish what he wills. Al-Qadir is one of the names of Allah, hence ʿAbd al-Qadir. In Turkish, Kadir also recalls kadir, “worth”, and Kadir Gecesi, the Night of Decree (laylat al-qadr), from a neighbouring word.
Say, "He is the [one] Able to send upon you affliction from above you or from beneath your feet or to confuse you [so you become] sects and make you taste the violence of one another." Look how We diversify the signs that they might understand.
And they say, "Why has a sign not been sent down to him from his Lord?" Say, "Indeed, Allāh is Able to send down a sign, but most of them do not know."
