Tafsir of verse 35
Al-Mukhtasar
Indeed, these idolaters, when it would be said to them in the world, “There is no deity worthy of worship except Allah” so that they could act upon its requirements and leave everything that contradicted it, they would reject answering the call to it and submitting to it out of arrogance from the truth and showing haughtiness to it.
for whenever it was said to them, “None has the right to be worshiped except Allah,” they became arrogant,
Truly, when it was said to them: Lâ ilâha illallâh "(none has the right to be worshipped but Allâh)," they puffed themselves up with pride3 (i.e. denied it).
Notes
[3] (V.37:35) See the footnote of (V.22:9).
For when it was said unto them, There is no Allah save Allah, they were scornful
For they, when they were told that there is no god except Allah, would puff themselves up with Pride,
Surely they used to behave proudly when it was said to them: There is no god but Allah;
Surely when it was said to them, "There is no god except Allah, " they were waxing proud.
So know, [O Muḥammad], that there is no deity except Allāh and ask forgiveness for your sin and for the believing men and believing women. And Allāh knows of your movement and your resting place.
