Maryam in Islam
Maryam, daughter of ʿImran and mother of the prophet ʿIsa (Jesus), is the only woman mentioned by name in the Quran: her name occurs thirty-four times and Surah 19 is named after her. The Quran says that Allah chose her above the women of the worlds (3:42), and the Prophet ﷺ counted her among the women who attained perfection (al-Bukhari 3411).
Maryam is the Arabic form of the Hebrew Miryam, the name of the sister of Moses and Aaron, later borne by the mother of Jesus. Its original meaning is debated (“beloved”, “bitter” and “exalted” have all been proposed); Muslim commentators such as al-Zamakhshari and Ibn Kathir report that in her language it means “the servant, the woman devoted to worship”. This is the meaning most often given for the name.
