Girl Arabic origin ʿĀʾisha
Mother of the Believers“She who lives”, alive and prosperous; name of a wife of the Prophet ﷺ
ʿAʾisha, daughter of Abu Bakr and Mother of the Believers, was the wife of the Prophet ﷺ and one of the greatest scholars of Islam: she transmitted more than two thousand hadiths, and the Companions consulted her. The Prophet ﷺ said: “The superiority of ʿAʾisha over other women is like that of tharid over other dishes” (al-Bukhari 3769).
ʿAʾisha is the feminine active participle of ʿasha, “to live”, from the root ʿ-y-sh of life and livelihood: “she who lives, who enjoys a happy and prosperous life”. The Quran uses a word from this root for the life of the blessed: “he will be in a pleasing life” (fi ʿishatin radiya, 101:7). The name takes different forms: Aisha or Ayesha in English, Aïcha in the Maghreb, Ayşe in Turkey, Aïssatou in West Africa.
The name Aisha does not appear as such in the Quran, but its root (ع ي ش) occurs 8 times. Examples:
He will be in a pleasant life.
So he will be in a pleasant life -
And We have made for you therein means of living and [for] those for whom you are not providers.
All the words of the root ع ي ش in the Quran (8 occurrences)
