Tafsir of verse 57
Al-Mukhtasar
When the idolaters thought that the Jesus the Christians worshipped was included in the statement of Allah the Exalted: {Indeed, you [disbelievers] and what you worship other than Allah are the firewood of Hell. You will be coming to [enter] it}, and Allah had prohibited worshipping him just like He had prohibited the worship of idols, your people, O Messenger, began persisting in argument, saying, “We are pleased that our idols are of the same status as Jesus.” So Allah revealed, refuting them, {Indeed, those for whom the best [reward] has preceded from Me - they are from it far removed}.

Notes
[22] When 21:98 was revealed, warning the pagans that all what they worship besides Allah will be in Hell, a poet who was a staunch enemy of Islam, Abdullah ibn az-Ziba‘ra, along with other pagans jeered and laughed arguing that Jesus will be in Hell as well! The Prophet (ﷺ) replied that the verse was talking exclusively about idols, adding that Jesus himself did not ask to be worshiped. Verse 21:101 was later revealed in support of the Prophet declaring that they are exempted.
And when the son of Maryam (Mary) is quoted as an example [i.e. ‘Îsâ (Jesus) is worshipped like their idols], behold, your people cry aloud (laugh out at the example).
And when the son of Mary is quoted as an example, behold! the folk laugh out,
When (Jesus) the son of Mary is held up as an example, behold, thy people raise a clamour thereat (in ridicule)!
And when a description of the son of Marium is given, lo! your people raise a clamor thereat.
And as soon as the son of Maryam (levity (Son of Mary, ) is struck as a similitude, only then have your people clamored aloud thereat.
And there is none from the People of the Scripture but that he will surely believe in him [i.e., Jesus] before his death. And on the Day of Resurrection he will be against them a witness.
