France: Islamic banks and finance

Checked on October 12, 2026

France has no dedicated legal framework for Islamic finance: since 2010-2011 the tax authorities have only clarified how murabaha, sukuk, ijara and istisna are taxed, and providers fall under the ordinary rules of the ACPR and the AMF. As of October 2026 no licensed Islamic bank operates in France; the banking offer rests on Chaabi Bank’s Harmonis range, which includes an interest-free account and murabaha home finance. Several apps offer interest-free payment accounts run through European payment institutions, and brokers distribute life insurance and retirement plans invested in screened funds. There is no licensed takaful insurer in France and no Islamic consumer or car finance for the general public.

Before you commit

  • Ask for the names of the Shariah board members and their published rulings on the product.
  • Check that the provider is authorised by the country’s regulator.
  • Compare the total cost, not just the monthly payment: the calculators in this section can help.
  • Read the contract: who owns the property, who bears the risk, late-payment charges and where they go.

Are Islamic banks really halal?
