Egypt: Islamic banks and finance

Checked on October 12, 2026

Egypt has had Islamic banks since 1979 without a separate Islamic banking law: they are supervised by the Central Bank of Egypt (CBE) under Banking Law 194 of 2020, while takaful insurance and sukuk fall under the Financial Regulatory Authority (FRA). Law 138 of 2021 set up sovereign sukuk, first issued in February 2023. The market includes fully Islamic banks (Faisal Islamic Bank of Egypt, Al Baraka Bank Egypt, ADIB Egypt) as well as state-owned and private banks with Islamic branches, such as Banque Misr. Islamic finance remains a minority compared with conventional banks, and several FRA-licensed takaful companies offer life and property cover.

Before you commit

  • Ask for the names of the Shariah board members and their published rulings on the product.
  • Check that the provider is authorised by the country’s regulator.
  • Compare the total cost, not just the monthly payment: the calculators in this section can help.
  • Read the contract: who owns the property, who bears the risk, late-payment charges and where they go.

Are Islamic banks really halal?
