Belgium: Islamic banks and finance

Checked on October 12, 2026

Belgium has adopted no legal or tax framework specific to Islamic finance, and neither the NBB nor the FSMA has licensed an Islamic bank. As of October 2026 no bank based in Belgium offers a Sharia-compliant account, home finance or car finance, despite projects discussed since the late 2000s. What Belgian residents can access is limited to investments: Islamic ETFs listed in Europe (MSCI World Islamic or Dow Jones Islamic indices) are available through mainstream online brokers. The Dutch neobank Sifr, which opened in the Netherlands in 2025, does not yet accept customers living in Belgium.

Before you commit

  • Ask for the names of the Shariah board members and their published rulings on the product.
  • Check that the provider is authorised by the country’s regulator.
  • Compare the total cost, not just the monthly payment: the calculators in this section can help.
  • Read the contract: who owns the property, who bears the risk, late-payment charges and where they go.

Are Islamic banks really halal?
