ألا إني أعطيت سورة البقرة من الذكر الأول، وأعطيت طه، والطواسين، والحواميم من ألواح موسى
“Indeed, I was given Surah Al-Baqarah from the first Reminder, and I was given Ta-Ha, the Tawasin and the Hawamim from the tablets of Moses.”
The merit of Surah Ash-Shu’ara is that it belongs to the Mi’un, given to the Prophet ﷺ in place of the Psalms, according to the hadith of Wathilah ibn al-Asqa’. It is one of the “Tawasin”, mentioned in two hadiths whose grade is not given. It is called “the Comprehensive Surah” (al-Jami’ah) because it gathers the themes of the Meccan surahs, and in it Allah commands the Prophet ﷺ to warn his nearest kin.
It is one of the Mi’un (surahs of a hundred verses or more), given to the Prophet ﷺ in place of the Psalms, according to the hadith of Wathilah ibn al-Asqa’: “I was given in place of the Torah the seven long ones, and in place of the Psalms the Mi’un.”
It is one of the “Tawasin”: Ash-Shu’ara and Al-Qasas, which open with “Ta-Sin-Mim”, and An-Naml, which opens with “Ta-Sin”. The Tawasin are mentioned in a hadith of Ma’qil ibn Yasar narrated by Ahmad and Abu Ya’la, and in a report of Al-Bara’ ibn Azib cited by Al-Qurtubi, with no grading of their authenticity.
Called “the Comprehensive Surah”, it is marked by its short verses and gathers the themes of the Meccan surahs: proofs of Allah’s oneness, the truth of the resurrection, the truthfulness of the Prophet ﷺ and the divine origin of the Qur’an.
In it Allah commands His Prophet ﷺ: “And warn your nearest kin.” According to the report of Ibn Abbas, when this verse was revealed he climbed As-Safa, called the clans of Quraysh and said: “I am a warner to you before a severe punishment.”

إن الله أعطاني السبع الطوال مكان التوراة … وأعطاني الطواسين مكان الزبور، وفضلني بالحواميم والمفصل ما قرأهن نبي قبلي
“Allah gave me the seven long surahs in place of the Torah … He gave me the Tawasin in place of the Psalms, and He favoured me with the Hawamim and the Mufassal, which no prophet before me recited.”
Main purpose: To show Allah’s signs in supporting the messengers and destroying the deniers.
Ash-Shu’ara (the Poets) is the 26th surah in the order of the Qur’an and the 46th in the order of revelation, revealed after Al-Waqi’ah; it has two hundred and twenty-seven verses. It is Meccan according to the majority; Ibn Abbas and Qatadah said its last four verses, from “And the poets are followed by the deviators”, were revealed in Medina. It is also called “Al-Jami’ah”, and the stories of the prophets with their peoples dominate it.
