One of the Mathani given in place of the Gospel

It is one of the Mathani, given to the Prophet ﷺ in place of the Gospel, according to the hadith of Wathilah ibn al-Asqa’: “I was given the seven long ones in place of the Torah, the Mi’un in place of the Psalms, and the Mathani in place of the Gospel.”

The hadith of the seven modes of recitation

Umar heard Hisham ibn Hakim reciting Al-Furqan in modes the Prophet ﷺ had not taught him; when they referred it to him, he said to each: “Thus it was revealed”, then: “This Qur’an has been revealed in seven modes (ahruf), so recite of it whatever is easy for you.”

Verses confirming the Prophet’s ﷺ words

Abdullah ibn Mas’ud asked the Prophet ﷺ which sin is greatest; he named setting up a rival to Allah, killing one’s child for fear it would share one’s food, and committing adultery with one’s neighbour’s wife. Allah revealed in confirmation: “Those who do not invoke another deity with Allah, nor kill the soul Allah has made sacred except by right, nor commit adultery.”

The servants of the Most Merciful and the door of repentance

The surah closes with the portrait of the servants of the Most Merciful: they walk humbly on the earth, spend the night prostrating and standing before their Lord, spend in moderation and avoid indecencies; and it shows that the door of repentance is open to whoever wishes to follow their way.
