Virtues and benefits of Surah Al-Mulk

Surah 67 30 verses Meccan

Surah Al-Mulk (Tabarak) is thirty verses that intercede for whoever recites them until he is forgiven. It is “the Protector” that shields from the punishment of the grave, and the Prophet ﷺ would not sleep until he had recited it with As-Sajdah, which is why it is read every night.

A surah of the Qur’an of thirty verses intercedes for its companion until he is forgiven: “Blessed is He in whose hand is the dominion” (Tabarak).

Narrated by Abu Hurayrah Abu Dawud (1400) and At-Tirmidhi (2891) Good (hasan) graded good by At-Tirmidhi, authenticated by Ibn Hibban and Al-Hakim, with Adh-Dhahabi’s agreement

A surah of the Qur’an of only thirty verses argued on behalf of its companion until it brought him into Paradise: it is Surah Tabarak.

Narrated by Anas ibn Malik At-Tabarani (Al-Mu’jam as-Saghir) Good (hasan) good chain, supported by the hadith of Abu Hurayrah

Surah Tabarak is the one that protects from the punishment of the grave.

Narrated by Abdullah ibn Mas’ud Abu ash-Shaykh (Tabaqat al-Muhaddithin) Good (hasan) chain graded good by Al-Albani (Silsilah as-Sahihah, 1140)

Whoever recites “Blessed is He in whose hand is the dominion” every night, Allah protects him by it from the punishment of the grave. In the time of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ we used to call it “the Protector” (al-Mani’ah). In the Book of Allah it is a surah: whoever recites it every night has done much and done well.

Saying of Abdullah ibn Mas’ud An-Nasa’i (As-Sunan al-Kubra, 10547) and At-Tabarani Good (hasan) chain judged sound by As-Suyuti; Al-Haythami: its narrators are trustworthy

The Messenger of Allah ﷺ would not sleep until he had recited “Alif-Lam-Mim. Tanzil” (As-Sajdah) and “Blessed is He in whose hand is the dominion”.

Narrated by Jabir ibn Abdullah At-Tirmidhi (2892) and An-Nasa’i (As-Sunan al-Kubra, 10544) Authentic (sahih) authenticated by Al-Hakim on Muslim’s criteria, with Adh-Dhahabi’s agreement

Widespread but unproven narrations

The account of the companion who pitched his tent over a grave and heard its occupant reciting Al-Mulk has a weak chain, as does the saying “I would love for it to be in the heart of every person of my nation”; the established hadiths above are sufficient.

The account of a companion who pitched his tent over a grave and heard a man in it reciting Al-Mulk to the end; the Prophet ﷺ is reported to have said: “It is the protector, it is the saviour: it saves him from the punishment of the grave.”

Narrated by Ibn Abbas At-Tirmidhi (2890) Weak (da’if) Al-Bayhaqi: only Yahya ibn Amr an-Nukri narrates it, and he is not reliable

“I would love for it to be in the heart of every person of my nation.”

Narrated by Ibn Abbas Abd ibn Humayd (Musnad, 603) and Al-Hakim Weak (da’if) it contains Ibrahim ibn al-Hakam ibn Aban, graded weak by Ad-Daraqutni, Ibn Ma’in and Ibn Hajar

What the surah is about

  • The greatness of Allah, sole Owner of dominion, who has power over all things
  • The wisdom behind creating death and life: to test who is best in deeds
  • The flawless creation of the heavens as a sign of His power
  • The fate of the disbelievers and the reward of those who fear their Lord unseen
  • Allah’s knowledge, from which nothing secret or open is hidden
  • The earth made subservient to people, who are told to seek their provision in it
  • The birds spreading their wings: none but Allah gives help or provision

Main purpose: To show the perfect dominion and power of Allah, so as to inspire fear of Him and warn against His punishment.
