Yaqub in Islam
Son of Ishaq and grandson of Ibrahim, Yaʿqub is the father of Yusuf and of the ancestors of the twelve tribes; the commentators identify him with Israʾil (3:93). Named 16 times in the Quran, he asked his sons as death approached: “What will you worship after me?” (2:133), and it was he who, deprived of Yusuf, said: “Beautiful patience!” (12:18). The Prophet ﷺ named him in the noble lineage of Yusuf (al-Bukhari 3382).
Meaning of the name Yaqub
Yaʿqub is the Arabic form of the Hebrew Yaʿaqov. The Bible explains it by ʿaqev, “heel”: he was born holding his twin brother’s heel, hence also the sense “he who supplants”; historians often see in it the short form of a name meaning “may God protect”. Al-Qurtubi reports the explanation from the heel (ʿaqib) but finds it doubtful, since the name is foreign; in Arabic, yaʿqub also means the male partridge, a mere coincidence.

Is Yaqub in the Quran?
Yes: Yaqub is named in the Quran 16 times, in 10 surahs.
Or were you witnesses when death approached Jacob, when he said to his sons, "What will you worship after me?" They said, "We will worship your God and the God of your fathers, Abraham and Ishmael and Isaac - one God. And we are Muslims [in submission] to Him."
And Abraham instructed his sons [to do the same] and [so did] Jacob, [saying], "O my sons, indeed Allāh has chosen for you this religion, so do not die except while you are Muslims."
And thus will your Lord choose you and teach you the interpretation of narratives [i.e., events or dreams] and complete His favor upon you and upon the family of Jacob, as He completed it upon your fathers before, Abraham and Isaac. Indeed, your Lord is Knowing and Wise."
