وَحَنَانًا مِّن لَّدُنَّا وَزَكَوٰةً وَكَانَ تَقِيًّا ١٣
And affection from Us and purity, and he was fearing of Allāh
تَقِيّ
Boy Arabic origin Taqiyy
In the QuranVirtue“Pious, God-fearing”
The word as it is recited in the Quran: Mahmoud Khalil Al-Hussary, Maryam 19:13.
The Quran describes Yahya as “pious (taqiyy) and dutiful to his parents” (19:13-14). Scholars disapproved of names that praise oneself, like Barra, which the Prophet ﷺ changed (al-Bukhari 6192); some included names of piety used on their own.
Taqiyy is the adjective of the root w-q-y of protection: the taqiyy is the one who guards himself from what displeases Allah, the pious (taqwa, “piety”). The name is also given in compounds, Taqi al-Din, “pious in religion”, like the scholar Ibn Taymiyya. Scholars have sometimes been reserved about names that praise oneself; see the rules page.
Yes: the word Taqi appears in the Quran 4 times, in 2 surahs.
