أَيْمَن
Boy Arabic origin Ayman
CompanionIn the Quran“Blessed, auspicious” and “on the right side”
The word as it is recited in the Quran: Mahmoud Khalil Al-Hussary, Maryam 19:52.
The Companion Ayman ibn ʿUbayd was the son of Baraka, who was therefore called Umm Ayman, “the mother of Ayman”; he was martyred at the battle of Hunayn in the year 8 AH. The Quran uses ayman three times for “the right side”, notably of the mount and the valley where Allah called Musa (19:52, 28:30), and the Prophet ﷺ liked to start with the right in all things (al-Bukhari 168).
Ayman comes from the root y-m-n, which unites the right (yamin) and blessing (yumn): for the ancient Arabs, the right was the side of good omen. Ayman describes what is on the right and, by extension, what is blessed and brings good fortune; it is also understood as “most blessed”. It is sometimes said that Ayman is the name of a gate of Paradise: in the hadith of intercession, al-bab al-ayman simply means “the right-hand gate” (al-Bukhari 4712); it is not a proper name.
Yes: the word Ayman appears in the Quran 3 times, in 3 surahs.
