ʿAfraʾ bint ʿUbayd, a Companion of the Ansar, was the mother of Muʿadh and Muʿawwidh, known as “the sons of ʿAfraʾ”. At Badr these two young men struck Abu Jahl, the fierce enemy of Islam (al-Bukhari 3962, 3141).
Meaning of the name Afra
ʿAfraʾ is the feminine of aʿfar, from the root ʿ-f-r of dust and sand (ʿafar): a white mixed with the colour of the earth, a word used for the light-coated gazelle. The name thus evokes the grace of the desert gazelle. Afra is much liked in Turkey; it is given in memory of a Companion of Medina.
