قُلْ أَعُوذُ بِرَبِّ ٱلْفَلَقِ ١
Say, "I seek refuge in the Lord of daybreak
مُعَاذ
Boy Arabic origin Muʿādh
Companion“The protected one”, he who has been granted refuge
Muʿadh ibn Jabal, an Ansari of Medina, was sent by the Prophet ﷺ to Yemen to teach Islam (al-Bukhari 1395). The Prophet ﷺ said that he was the most knowledgeable of his community about what is lawful and unlawful (al-Tirmidhi 3790), and, taking his hand, told him: “O Muʿadh, by Allah, I love you” (Abu Dawud 1522). He died in the plague of ʿAmwas in Syria.
Muʿadh is the passive participle of aʿadha, “to grant refuge, to place under protection”, from the root ʿ-w-dh of seeking protection (ʿawdh): the name means one who is protected, kept in Allah’s care. The same root gives the formula aʿudhu bi-Llah, “I seek refuge in Allah”, and the name of the last two surahs of the Quran, al-muʿawwidhatan. Vowelled with an a (maʿadh), the word means “refuge”: maʿadha Llah, “Allah forbid” (12:23).
The name Muadh does not appear as such in the Quran, but its root (ع و ذ) occurs 17 times. Examples:
قُلْ أَعُوذُ بِرَبِّ ٱلْفَلَقِ ١
Say, "I seek refuge in the Lord of daybreak
قُلْ أَعُوذُ بِرَبِّ ٱلنَّاسِ ١
