Narrator:Abdullāh ibn ‘Umar

أَخْبَرَنَا إِسْمَاعِيلُ بْنُ مَسْعُودٍ، قَالَ حَدَّثَنَا خَالِدٌ، عَنْ شُعْبَةَ، قَالَ أَخْبَرَنِي مَنْصُورٌ، عَنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ مُرَّةَ، عَنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ عُمَرَ، أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صلى الله عليه وسلم نَهَى عَنِ النَّذْرِ وَقَالَ ‏

"‏ إِنَّهُ لاَ يَأْتِي بِخَيْرٍ إِنَّمَا يُسْتَخْرَجُ بِهِ مِنَ الْبَخِيلِ ‏"

It was narrated from 'Abdullah bin 'Umar that the Messenger of Allah forbade vows and said:

"They do not bring any good; they are just a means of taking wealth from the miserly."

Reported by An-Nasa’i (No. 3801), Muslim (No. 1639c, 1639d) and Ahmad (No. 5335).

Al-Sindi — Hashiyat al-Sindi on Sunan al-Nasa'i

قَوْله ( نَهَى عَنْ النَّذْر ) أَيْ بِظَنِّ أَنَّهُ يُفِيدُ فِي حُصُول الْمَطْلُوب وَالْخَلَاص عَنْ الْمَكْرُوه ( مِنْ الْبَخِيل ) الَّذِي لَا يَأْتِي بِهَذِهِ الطَّاعَة إِلَّا فِي مُقَابَلَة شِفَاء مَرِيض وَنَحْوه مِمَّا عَلَّقَ النَّذْر عَلَيْهِ وَقَالَ الْخَطَّابِيُّ نَهَى عَنْ النَّذْر تَأْكِيدًا لِأَمْرِهِ وَتَحْذِيرًا لِلتَّهَاوُنِ بِهِ بَعْدَ إِيجَابِهِ وَلَيْسَ النَّهْي لِإِفَادَةِ أَنَّهُ مَعْصِيَةٌ وَإِلَّا لَمَا وَجَبَ الْوَفَاء بِهِ بَعْد كَوْنه مَعْصِيَة وَاَللَّه تَعَالَى أَعْلَم.…

The Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) forbade vowing and said: "Indeed, it does not bring any good; rather it is only a means to extract something from the miser."

The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) forbade to make a vow. He said: It has not effect against fate, it is only from the miserly that it is means by which something is extracted. Musaddad said: The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said: A vow does not avert anything (i.e. has no effect against fate).

Authentic Sunan Abu Dawud 3288

The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) as saying: A vow does not provide for the son of Adam anything which I did not decree for him, but a vow draws it. A Divine decree is one which I have destined, it is extracted from a miser. He is given what he was not given before.

‏ لاَ يَأْتِي ابْنَ آدَمَ النَّذْرُ الْقَدَرَ بِشَىْءٍ لَمْ أَكُنْ قَدَّرْتُهُ لَهُ، وَلَكِنْ يُلْقِيهِ النَّذْرُ الْقَدَرَ قَدَّرْتُهُ يُسْتَخْرَجُ مِنَ الْبَخِيلِ يُؤْتَى عَلَيْهِ مَا لَمْ يَكُنْ يُؤْتَى مِنْ قَبْلُ ‏"

Authentic Sahih Muslim 1640c

The vow does not bring anything near to the son of Adam which Allah has not ordained for him, but (at times) the vow coincides with Destiny, and this is how something is extracted from the miserly person, which that miser was not willing to give.

النَّذْرَ لاَ يُقَرِّبُ مِنِ ابْنِ آدَمَ شَيْئًا لَمْ يَكُنِ اللَّهُ قَدَّرَهُ لَهُ وَلَكِنِ النَّذْرُ يُوَافِقُ الْقَدَرَ فَيُخْرَجُ بِذَلِكَ مِنَ الْبَخِيلِ مَا لَمْ يَكُنِ الْبَخِيلُ يُرِيدُ أَنْ يُخْرِجَ ‏"
