Chapter: The use of perfume while assuming Ihram

Authentic hadith of Sahih al-Bukhari Muttafaq ‘alayh (Bukhari and Muslim) Sahih al-Bukhari 1539

حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ يُوسُفَ، أَخْبَرَنَا مَالِكٌ، عَنْ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنِ الْقَاسِمِ، عَنْ أَبِيهِ، عَنْ عَائِشَةَ ـ رضى الله عنها ـ زَوْجِ النَّبِيِّ صلى الله عليه وسلم قَالَتْ

كُنْتُ أُطَيِّبُ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صلى الله عليه وسلم لإِحْرَامِهِ حِينَ يُحْرِمُ، وَلِحِلِّهِ قَبْلَ أَنْ يَطُوفَ بِالْبَيْتِ‏.‏

Narrated `Aisha:

(the wife of the Prophet (p.b.u.h) I used to scent Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) when he wanted to assume Ihram and also on finishing Ihram before the Tawaf round the Ka`ba (Tawaf-al-ifada).

Explanation in Arabic

قالت عائشة رضي الله عنها: كنت أُطيِّب رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم لأجل إحرامه قبل أن يحرم، والمراد تطييب بدنه، وليس تطييب ثيابه، وقد دل على اختصاصه ببدنه حديث لآخر عن عائشة رضي الله عنه، ولا يمكن أن يراد بالإحرام هنا فعل الإحرام فإن التطيب حال الإحرام ممتنع بلا شك، قالت: ولِحِلِّه قبل أن يطوف بالبيت، أي بعد التحلل، لتحلله من محظورات الإحرام بعد أن يرمي ويحلق وقبل أن يطوف بالبيت طواف الإفاضة.

استحباب التطيب عند إرادة الإحرام، وجواز استدامته بعد الإحرام، وأنه لا يضر بقاء لونه ورائحته، وإنما يحرم ابتداؤه في الإحرام.
استحباب التطيب بعد التحلل الأول قبل الطواف.
المراد بالتطيب هو تطييب البدن لا الثياب.

قَوْله : ( ِإِحْرَامِهِ ) أَيْ لِأَجْلِ إِحْرَامه , وَلِلنَّسَائِيِّ " حِينَ أَرَادَ أَنْ يُحْرِم " وَلِمُسْلِمٍ نَحْوه كَمَا سَيَأْتِي قَرِيبًا. قَوْله : ( وَلِحِلِّهِ ) أَيْ بَعْدَ أَنْ يَرْمِي وَيَحْلِق. وَاسْتُدِلَّ بِقَوْلِهَا " كُنْت أُطَيِّب " عَلَى أَنَّ " كَانَ " لَا تَقْتَضِي التَّكْرَار لِأَنَّهَا لَمْ يَقَع مِنْهَا ذَلِكَ إِلَّا مَرَّة وَاحِدَة , وَقَدْ صَرَّحَتْ فِي رِوَايَة عُرْوَة عَنْهَا بِأَنَّ ذَلِكَ كَانَ فِي حَجَّة الْوَدَاع كَمَا سَيَأْتِي فِي كِتَاب اللِّبَاس , كَذَا اِسْتَدَلَّ بِهِ النَّوَوِيّ فِي " شَرْح مُسْلِم " وَتُعُقِّبَ بِأَنَّ الْمُدَّعَى تَكْرَاره إِنَّمَا هُوَ التَّطَيُّب لَا الْإِحْرَام , وَلَا مَانِع مِنْ أَنْ يَتَكَرَّر التَّطَيُّب لِأَجْلِ الْإِحْرَام مَ…

I heard my father who was the best man of his age, saying, "I heard `Aisha saying, 'I perfumed Allah's Apostle with my own hands before finishing his Ihram while yet he has not performed Tawaf-al- Ifada.' She spread her hands (while saying so.)"

I applied the best available perfume I could find to the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) before he entered upon the state of Ihram and after he was free from it.

`A’ishah said ; I used to perfume the Messenger of Allah (SWAS) preparatory to his entering the sacred state before he put on Ihram, and preparatory to putting off Ihram before he made the circuits round the House (the Ka’bah).

The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said: When one of you throws pebbles at the last jamrah (Jamrat al-Aqabah), everything becomes lawful for him except women (sexual intercourse). Abu Dawud said: This is a weak tradition. The narrator al-Hajjaj neither saw al-Zuhri nor heard tradition from him.
