Tafsir of verse 72
Al-Mukhtasar
When the angels gave Sarah this amazing good news, she asked how she could have a child when she was an old woman and her husband was also advanced in age. Having a child at such an age was incredible, and was not normal.
She said, “Alas for me!39 How can I bear a child while I am an old woman, and this is my husband, an old man? This is a strange thing indeed!”
Notes
[39] An expression of astonishment and amazement.
She said (in astonishment): "Woe unto me! Shall I bear a child while I am an old woman,5 and here is my husband an old man? Verily! This is a strange thing!"
Notes
[5] (V.11:72) See (V.51:29).
She said: Oh woe is me! Shall I bear a child when I am an old woman, and this my husband is an old man? Lo! this is a strange thing!
She said: "Alas for me! shall I bear a child, seeing I am an old woman, and my husband here is an old man? That would indeed be a wonderful thing!"
She said: O wonder! shall I bear a son when I am an extremely old woman and this my husband an extremely old man? Most surely this is a wonderful thing.
She said, "O woe to me! will I give birth and I am an old woman, and this my husband is an aged man? Surely, this is indeed a wonderful thing."
Or were you witnesses when death approached Jacob, when he said to his sons, "What will you worship after me?" They said, "We will worship your God and the God of your fathers, Abraham and Ishmael and Isaac - one God. And we are Muslims [in submission] to Him."
