Virtues and benefits of Surah Hud

Surah 11 123 verses Meccan

It is established that Abu Bakr said to the Prophet ﷺ: “O Messenger of Allah, you have grown grey!” He replied: “Hud, Al-Waqi’ah, Al-Mursalat, ’Amma yatasa’alun and At-Takwir have made me grey,” or in another version: “Hud and its sisters”, because of the terrors of the Last Day and the punishments that struck past nations. It is one of the Mi’un, given to the Prophet ﷺ in place of the Psalms.

Its virtues at a glance

  • It turned the Messenger of Allah ﷺ grey

When told “You have grown grey”, the Prophet ﷺ replied: “Hud, Al-Waqi’ah, Al-Mursalat, ’Amma yatasa’alun and At-Takwir have made me grey,” or: “Hud and its sisters”, because of the terrors of the Last Day and the punishments of past nations that these surahs describe.

    Good (hasan)At-Tirmidhi (3297) and Al-Hakim Authentic (sahih)At-Tabarani (Al-Mu’jam al-Kabir, 790)

  • A vision of the Day of Resurrection

The Prophet ﷺ said: “Whoever would like to look at the Day of Resurrection as if seeing it with his own eyes, let him recite At-Takwir and Al-Infitar.” In Ahmad’s version the narrator added: “I think he also said: and Surah Hud”, so its mention is uncertain.

    Authentic (sahih)Ahmad (Al-Musnad, 2/27) and At-Tirmidhi (3333)

  • One of the Mi’un

It is one of the Mi’un (surahs of a hundred verses or more), given to the Prophet ﷺ in place of the Psalms, according to the hadith of Wathilah ibn al-Asqa’: “I was given in place of the Torah the seven long ones, and in place of the Psalms the Mi’un.”

  • Surahs that overwhelm the soul

According to Al-Qurtubi, reciting these surahs reveals to the hearts of those who know Allah His sovereignty and the severity of His seizing, so that souls are overwhelmed and heads turn grey.

Abu Bakr said: “O Messenger of Allah, you have grown grey!” He replied: “Hud, Al-Waqi’ah, Al-Mursalat, ‘About what are they asking one another?’ and ‘When the sun is wrapped up’ have made me grey.”

Narrated by Abdullah ibn Abbas At-Tirmidhi (3297) and Al-Hakim Good (hasan) graded good by At-Tirmidhi, authenticated by Al-Hakim on Al-Bukhari’s criteria, with Adh-Dhahabi’s agreement

Widespread but unproven narrations

The hadith “Recite Surah Hud on Friday” is not established as the Prophet’s ﷺ word: it is narrated by Ka’b without a chain reaching him, even though its narrators are trustworthy, and As-Suyuti counts it among Abu Dawud’s Marasil.

اقرأوا سورة هود يوم الجمعة

“Recite Surah Hud on Friday.”

Narrated by Ka’b Ad-Darimi (3400) and Al-Bayhaqi (Shu’ab al-Iman, 2438) Mursal (broken chain) cut off (maqtu’) though its narrators are trustworthy; As-Suyuti attributes it to Abu Dawud’s Marasil

What the surah is about

  • The Qur’an’s perfected, detailed verses as proof of its divine origin, and the challenge to produce ten surahs
  • Encouraging obedience to Allah and warning against disobedience
  • Comfort for the Prophet ﷺ through the stories of Noah, Hud, Salih, Shu’ayb and Lot with their peoples
  • Allah’s way with nations: He wrongs no one, and His seizing of unjust towns is painful and severe
  • Allah does not unjustly destroy towns whose people do good
  • The command to be upright and patient, and good deeds that erase bad ones
  • Noah and his son: love of children is innate, kept within the limits of the Law

Main purpose: To strengthen the Prophet ﷺ and the believers with the stories of earlier prophets, and to intensify the warning to the deniers.
