سورة الزخرف، الآية ٥٦
فَجَعَلْنَٰهُمْ سَلَفًا وَمَثَلًا لِّلْـَٔاخِرِينَ ٥٦
fajaʿalnāhum salafan wamathalan lil'ākhirīna
And We made them a precedent and an example for the later peoples.
Verse 56 of Surah Az-Zukhruf (43:56), a Meccan surah, is in juz 25, on page 493 of the mushaf. Read it in Arabic with its transliteration, translations and tafsir, and listen to it recited by 74 reciters.

So I made Pharaoh and his people an example for those who did actions like theirs, that they would perish just like they did. I also made them a lesson for those who take heed; so that they do not do the same actions as theirs and are then afflicted with whatever came upon them.
Thus We made them a precedent and a lesson21 for the later generations.
[21] A precedent for those who do not learn any lesson from their example, and a lesson for those who are keen to learn a lesson.
And We made them a precedent (as a lesson for those coming after them), and an example to later generations.
And We made them a thing past, and an example for those after (them).
And We made them (a people) of the Past and an Example to later ages.
And We made them a precedent and example to the later generations.
So We made them a bygone (precedent) and a similitude to the later (generations).
