Other translations of verse 120

[Satan] makes promises to them and arouses in them false hopes, but Satan makes no promises to them except delusion88.

Notes

[88] “Satan will say [to his followers on the Day or Judgment] after the matter has been settled: “Allah gave you a true promise; I also gave you promise, but I betrayed you...” See 14:22.

He [Shaitân (Satan)] makes promises to them, and arouses in them false desires; and Shaitân’s (Satân) promises are nothing but deceptions.

He promiseth them and stirreth up desires in them, and Satan promiseth them only to beguile.

Satan makes them promises, and creates in them false desires; but satan's promises are nothing but deception.

He gives them promises and excites vain desires in them; and the Shaitan does not promise them but to deceive.

He promises them and arouses vain covetings in them; and in no way does Ash-Shaytan (The all-vicious, i.e., the Devil) promise them (anything) except delusion.

  • Ibrahim 14:22

And Satan will say when the matter has been concluded, "Indeed, Allāh had promised you the promise of truth. And I promised you, but I betrayed you. But I had no authority over you except that I invited you, and you responded to me. So do not blame me; but blame yourselves. I cannot be called to your aid, nor can you be called to my aid. Indeed, I deny your association of me [with Allāh] before. Indeed, for the wrongdoers is a painful punishment."
