Tafsir of verse 4

Al-Mukhtasar

O Messenger! Indeed, those bedouins who call out to you from behind the dwellings of your wives, the majority of them do not understand, so do not worry about them, because if they were understanding, they would surely show good manners to you and would definitely wait until you came out to them. Then, when you came out to them, they would speak to you about their matters by lowering their voices. However, most of them have not yet understood this.

Other translations of verse 4

As for those who call out to you [O Prophet] from behind the chambers, most of them have no understanding.

Verily those who call you from behind the dwellings, most of them have no sense.

Lo! those who call thee from behind the private apartments, most of them have no sense.

Those who shout out to thee from without the inner apartments - most of them lack understanding.

(As for) those who call out to you from behind the private chambers, surely most of them do not understand.

Surely (the ones) who call out to you from beyond the apartments, most of them do not consider.

Do not make [your] calling of the Messenger among yourselves as the call of one of you to another. Already Allāh knows those of you who slip away, concealed by others. So let those beware who dissent from his [i.e., the Prophet's] order, lest fitnah strike them or a painful punishment.
