Virtues and benefits of Surah Al-Hujurat

Surah 49 18 verses Medinan

No specific hadith is reported about the virtues of Surah Al-Hujurat; it is one of the Mathani given to the Prophet ﷺ in place of the Gospel, according to the hadith of Wathilah ibn al-Asqa’. Some call it “the surah of morals”: courtesy towards Allah and His Messenger ﷺ, verifying news, reconciling believers, and forbidding mockery, suspicion, spying and backbiting.

Its virtues at a glance

  • One of the Mathani given in place of the Gospel

It is one of the Mathani, according to the hadith of Wathilah ibn al-Asqa’, graded good: “I was given the seven long ones in place of the Torah, the Mi’un in place of the Psalms, the Mathani in place of the Gospel, and I was favoured with the Mufassal.”

  • A compendium of the noblest manners

The surah gathers the noblest manners, the most eloquent admonitions and the wisest guidance: it teaches the believers their duties towards their Creator, their Prophet ﷺ, themselves, their brothers and society as a whole; hence the name “surah of morals”.

What the surah is about

  • Courtesy towards Allah and His Messenger ﷺ: not raising one’s voice above the Prophet’s ﷺ
  • The command to verify news
  • Reconciling believers who fight, and fighting the aggressing party until it returns to Allah’s command
  • The prohibition of mockery, defamation and insulting nicknames
  • Avoiding bad suspicion; the prohibition of spying and backbiting
  • People created from a male and a female; the noblest before Allah is the most pious
  • Reply to the Bedouins who said “we believe” though faith had not entered their hearts, and the traits of true believers
  • Guidance to faith as Allah’s favour alone, and His knowledge of the unseen of the heavens and the earth

Main purpose: To discipline the tongue and show its effect on the individual’s faith and on society’s morals.

About Surah Al-Hujurat

Al-Hujurat is a purely Medinan surah of eighteen verses, revealed after Surah Al-Mujadilah; some call it “the surah of morals” (al-Akhlaq). Its teachings on proper conduct towards the Prophet ﷺ were occasioned by the rudeness of the delegation of Banu Tamim, when they called out to him at his apartments.
