Transliteration

qul mā yaʿba-u bikum rabbī lawlā duʿāukum faqad kadhabtum fasawfa yakūnu lizāman

Translation

Say, "What would my Lord care for you if not for your supplication?"1040 For you [disbelievers] have denied, so it [i.e., your denial] is going to be adherent.1041

Notes

[1040] i.e., faith and worship. An alternative meaning is "What would my Lord do with you..."
[1041] It will remain with them, causing punishment to be required and imperative upon them.

Tafsir of verse 77

Al-Mukhtasar

Say - O Messenger, to the disbelievers who persist in their disbelief: My Lord will never care about you because of some benefit that He gets from your obedience. If it were not because He calls you for your benefit He would not have cared about you. Now since you rejected that which the Messengers brought from your Lord, the recompense for such rejection will be inseparable from you.

Other translations of verse 77

Say [O Prophet], “My Lord would not care at all about you, were it not for your supplication41. Now since you have rejected [the truth], the inevitable is bound to come42.”

Notes

[41] i.e., faith and worship.
[42] Or it will be adhering to you.

Say (O Muhammad صلى الله عليه وسلم to the disbelievers): "My Lord pays attention to you only because of your invocation to Him. But now you have indeed denied (Him). So the torment will be yours for ever (inseparable, permanent punishment)."

Say (O Muhammad, unto the disbelievers): My Lord would not concern Himself with you but for your prayer. But now ye have denied (the Truth), therefor there will be judgment.

Say (to the Rejecters): "My Lord is not uneasy because of you if ye call not on Him: But ye have indeed rejected (Him), and soon will come the inevitable (punishment)!"

Say: My Lord would not care for you were it not for your prayer; but you have indeed rejected (the truth), so that which shall cleave shall come.

Say, (To the disbelievers)" In no way would my Lord care for you were it not for your invocation. Yet you have cried lies, so it (Punishment) will eventually be an imposition.
