The word as it is recited in the Quran: Mahmoud Khalil Al-Hussary, Al-A’raf 7:31.
Zina in Islam
The word occurs nineteen times in the Quran: “O children of Adam, take your adornment (zinatakum) at every place of prayer” (7:31); “Wealth and children are the adornment of worldly life” (18:46); “We have adorned the nearest heaven with an adornment: the stars” (37:6).
Meaning of the name Zina
Zina means adornment, all that embellishes, and beauty itself (root z-y-n, that of Zayn). The name is common in the Maghreb, the Levant (Zeina) and Turkey. It should not be confused with Zaynab, a different name.
O children of Adam, take your adornment [i.e., wear your clothing] at every masjid, and eat and drink, but be not excessive. Indeed, He likes not those who commit excess.
Wealth and children are [but] adornment of the worldly life. But the enduring good deeds are better to your Lord for reward and better for [one's] hope.
Say, "Who has forbidden the adornment of [i.e., from] Allāh which He has produced for His servants and the good [lawful] things of provision?" Say, "They are for those who believed during the life of this world, exclusively [for them] on the Day of Resurrection." Thus do We detail the verses for a people who know.
