Zaynab was the name of the Prophet’s eldest daughter ﷺ, of two of his wives — Zaynab bint Khuzayma, called “the mother of the poor”, and Zaynab bint Jahsh, whose marriage is mentioned in 33:37 — and of his granddaughter, the daughter of ʿAli and Fatima. The Prophet ﷺ gave this name to women called Barra (“the pious one”) so that they would not praise themselves (al-Bukhari 6192).
Meaning of the name Zaynab
The meaning of Zaynab is debated. Arabic dictionaries give it as the name of a tree or plant with beautiful flowers and a pleasant scent; it has also been linked to zayn (“adornment, beauty”) and ab (“father”), hence the popular explanation “her father’s adornment”, which is not established. The name is much loved because several women of the Prophet’s family ﷺ bore it.
