زَكِيّ
Boy Arabic origin Zakiyy
In the Quran“Pure, virtuous”, growing in goodness
The word as it is recited in the Quran: Mahmoud Khalil Al-Hussary, Maryam 19:19.
The word occurs once in the Quran, in the angel’s announcement to Maryam: “I am the messenger of your Lord, to give you a pure boy (ghulaman zakiyyan)” (19:19): that is, ʿIsa. The feminine zakiyya describes the “pure soul” of the boy in the story of Musa and al-Khadir (18:74).
Zakiyy comes from the root z-k-w of purity and growth (that of zakat, the alms that purifies and makes wealth grow): it refers to one pure of faults who grows in goodness. In Turkish, Zeki mostly comes from another Arabic word, dhakiyy (ذكي), “intelligent”; in Egypt too the two are pronounced alike.
Yes: the word Zaki appears in the Quran once, in one surah.
