CompanionIn the Quran“Safe and sound”, unharmed, kept from all harm
The word as it is recited in the Quran: Mahmoud Khalil Al-Hussary, Al-Qalam 68:43.
Salim, the freedman of Abu Hudhayfa, was a great reciter of the Quran: before the Prophet ﷺ arrived in Medina, he led the prayer of the first emigrants at Qubaʾ, as he knew the most Quran among them (al-Bukhari 692). The Prophet ﷺ said: “Learn the recitation of the Quran from four: ʿAbd Allah ibn Masʿud, Salim the freedman of Abu Hudhayfa, Ubayy ibn Kaʿb and Muʿadh ibn Jabal” (al-Bukhari 3758). He died a martyr at al-Yamama.
Salim (Saalim) is the active participle of salima, “to be safe and sound, to escape harm”: it means one who is unharmed, healthy and free from defect. It comes from the root s-l-m of peace and safety (salam), which also gives islam and muslim. The Quran uses the plural salimun once, of those who were called to prostrate “while they were sound” (68:43). It should not be confused with Saleem (سليم), another name of similar meaning with a long i.
Yes: the word Salim appears in the Quran once, in one surah.
