Hudhayfa ibn al-Yaman was called โthe keeper of the secret that no one else knowsโ (al-Bukhari 3743). He said: โPeople used to ask the Messenger of Allah ๏ทบ about good, and I used to ask him about evil, for fear that it might overtake meโ (al-Bukhari 3606). During the battle of the Trench, the Prophet ๏ทบ sent him alone to observe the enemy army (Muslim 1788).
Hudhayfa is a diminutive built on the root h-dh-f, which expresses cutting off and throwing. The classical dictionaries simply record it as a manโs name; it is usually linked to hadhafa, the name of the small black sheep of the Hijaz, which some lexicographers also give to a kind of small duck. The exact meaning of the name therefore remains uncertain. It is given above all in memory of Hudhayfa ibn al-Yaman.
