رُفَيْدَة
Girl Arabic origin Rufayda
Female Companion“Little help, little support”, from the root of aid and giving
Rufayda al-Aslamiyya tended the wounded in Medina. When Saʿd ibn Muʿadh was seriously wounded at the Battle of the Trench, he was carried to her, and the Prophet ﷺ, passing by, asked him every evening and every morning how he was (al-Bukhari, al-Adab al-Mufrad 1129). She is often described as the first nurse in Islam.
Rufayda is a diminutive formed on the root r-f-d, which expresses help and giving: rifd is the gift offered and the aid brought, rifada the band used to support a wound and, in Mecca, the office of feeding the pilgrims. The name thus means “little help, little support”, with a note of tenderness. It is given in memory of Rufayda al-Aslamiyya, who tended the wounded in Medina.
The name Rufaida does not appear as such in the Quran, but its root (ر ف د) occurs 2 times. Examples:
