وَٱذْكُرِ ٱسْمَ رَبِّكَ وَتَبَتَّلْ إِلَيْهِ تَبْتِيلًا ٨
And remember the name of your Lord and devote yourself to Him with [complete] devotion.
بَتُول
Girl Arabic origin Batūl
Family of the Prophet ﷺ“She who devotes herself to Allah”; al-Batul, epithet of Maryam and Fatima
Tradition gives the epithet al-Batul to Maryam, dedicated to Allah even before her birth (3:35), and to Fatima, daughter of the Prophet ﷺ. The Quran uses the verb from the same root: “Remember the name of your Lord and devote yourself to Him completely” (73:8). The Prophet ﷺ, however, refused ʿUthman ibn Mazʿun permission to renounce marriage (al-Bukhari 5073).
Batul comes from the root b-t-l, “to cut off, to separate”: the old dictionaries define the batul as a virgin who keeps apart from marriage, and also as a woman detached from this world to devote herself to Allah. It is this second sense, devotion, that the name carries. Tradition gives this epithet to Maryam, mother of ʿIsa, and to Fatima, daughter of the Prophet ﷺ. Betül is a very popular name in Turkey.
The name Batool does not appear as such in the Quran, but its root (ب ت ل) occurs 2 times. Examples:
وَٱذْكُرِ ٱسْمَ رَبِّكَ وَتَبَتَّلْ إِلَيْهِ تَبْتِيلًا ٨
And remember the name of your Lord and devote yourself to Him with [complete] devotion.
