The word ʿAzzam is not in the Quran, but resolution (ʿazm) is praised there: “Be patient, as the messengers of firm resolve (ulu l-ʿazm) were patient” (46:35), and the Quran tells the Prophet ﷺ: “Once you have made a decision, put your trust in Allah” (3:159).
Meaning of the name Azzam
ʿAzzam is an intensive form built on ʿazm, “resolution, firm will” (root ʿ-z-m): a very resolute man, who carries through what he has decided. Al-Layth defines ʿazm as “what your heart has firmly resolved to do”. The name is borne in the Middle East, Egypt and the Gulf, and is also found as a family name.
So be patient, [O Muḥammad], as were those of determination among the messengers and do not be impatient for them. It will be - on the Day they see that which they are promised - as though they had not remained [in the world] except an hour of a day. [This is] notification. And will [any] be destroyed except the defiantly disobedient people?
So by mercy from Allāh, [O Muḥammad], you were lenient with them. And if you had been rude [in speech] and harsh in heart, they would have disbanded from about you. So pardon them and ask forgiveness for them and consult them in the matter. And when you have decided, then rely upon Allāh. Indeed, Allāh loves those who rely [upon Him].
You will surely be tested in your possessions and in yourselves. And you will surely hear from those who were given the Scripture before you and from those who associate others with Allāh much abuse. But if you are patient and fear Allāh - indeed, that is of the matters [worthy] of resolve.
